If you want to know how to do a link, start a new post.
Look at the buttons to the right of your avatar, and pick the one that looks like two links of chain. (NB. If you are using a smartfone, this guideline may not work for you yet since you may not get the chain button. You can still use links but you have to put the BB code in yourselves. )
Press the downward arrow and you get this in blue;
http://
Paste in the link to the website and press OK. I'm using the link to the 10 Commandments. Then use Preview. What will appear in the post is this: shipoffools.com/community/faqs/ten.html
But you probably don't want that! You will want to give the link a name. So you'll see that the text after this ], beginning shipofffools is also in blue. All you do is type in the name you want to give the thread and that overwrites the text. And the net result is this
It's a little different from the old process, but just as easy
You may also want to link to a post on this website. Let's show how that works with Simon's first post on this. Right click on the Date/Time at the top right of post and you get a drop down menu including "Copy link address". Click on that . (If you are using an iPad or an Android Pad or a Mac, press lightly on the Date/Time and you get the drop down menu that way
Then press on the link and go through the above process, naming the thread Simon's thread, and you get this .
That's a bit different over here. There are loads of them, but we lose a few favourites, like vomit, laughing out loud and paranoid. The way to see what we've got is to type in a colon, followed by a letter. Below is what you get with "g".
But you can still do this, which will do for laughing out loud. It's one of the colon m options.

Is there a list of the codes for the various emoticons, or do we simply learn them by trial?
I see that there's a facility for custom emojis. Would it be possible at some point to add in the 'votive' icon?
If we find out how, we will definitely be adding that one. It’s not been very high on our priorities list though (small things like making sure you can all register and post have been higher)

Experiment with making link to TinyURL, a page which will create a short-form link.
Used it to make this link to : Wikipedia page which has a chart comparing html code to BBCode. (The actual link is tinyurl.com/99xop)
PS - desktop & router now seem to be working

I have an issue. Sometimes, when I click the little 'link' icon and paste in a url, I get the red/blue coloration that allows me to key in a description of the link. And sometimes it's just black letters. Popping the description in just before the end bracket does not get me colored lettering, and when I then post the comment it doesn't appear as it ought. It worked out OK up above. Trying it here: https://washingtonpost.com/news/the-fix/wp/2018/02/28/cindy-mccain-sounds-off-on-trump-we-dont-need-more-bullying-and-im-tired-of-it/?utm_term=.bb341d22e44f No colors, red or blue, until I make the post. Am I doing it wrong?

Simon's post.
At any rate, this is how I do it. Have a go!
Taking care not to duplicate the "http://" part, of course!

Definitely more than four.
And, he's off .... leading post count won't be far away
Nope. Make sure you preview, people!

Which I arrived at via colon + a....
I think the emoticonica is going to take a bit of getting used to!

The less fun route would be to read this

Hmmm. That almost looks like it works!
ETA: Rhetorical question. It was explained very nicely above.
ETA 2: And a generous 6 minutes to edit? Is this Heaven?
Your jealousy is so flattering.

Experimenting with putting in a link. In this one, from the POST, God speaks unto Oprah, who doesn't listen.
