  • My frustration thus far today with the cricket has been leavened by finding a church with a medieval wall painting that appears (it's rather faint) to show a chap with his tadger on display and, in the graveyard, the grave of someone who must have been one of his descendants, one Richard Tugwood!

I also spotted a vintage glider being launched as we passed a local airfield, which was nice.

In more domestic news, our Naked Wines delivery has turned up, meaning we have red to go with our haggis. This is a Good Thing.

We will be meeting our cultural obligation to have haggis, neeps and tatties on Monday - but with beer. Between whiles it will be French burger with integral cheeses, and Chinese duck,

Calm and clear now, but perishingly cold.

We have also had a Naked Wines delivery recently, so are well stocked up.

I made Cranachan for dessert last night (a meal with friends) and despite me thinking I had over-toasted the oatmeal it went down well and there was nothing to bring home. Fortunately, there had been enough of it for me to keep back two portions for Mr Nen and me this evening, so a proper Burns Night dessert on the right evening; however the mains will be the usual stir fry because (1) Saturday (2) I don't like haggis.
  • Our local garden centre has an offer this weekend where, if I name my favourite garden bird at the till, I get a free bag of bird seed.

I may also get a fat lip if I am not careful.

One of these I presume? These not being garden birds...

That's even better than what I was thinking!

FB friend correctly identified one of these and had her post pulled for violating community standards.

    LMAO!
  • We had haggis etc but no Irn Bru - W++tr+s+ doesn't seem to stock it.

Very much enjoyed our visit to Grimsby. We found a nice bar for lunch where we had some good flatbreads with garlic mushrooms on mine and bang bang cauliflower on my husbands. Then a trip round the fishing museum. There was also a temporary exhibition of railway posters from the area along with various time tables. I do like looking at where I could go on a train pre-Beeching.
  • PuzzlerPuzzler Shipmate
I throughly enjoyed my day of singing. Really well organised, lovely cakes, great music, some interesting conversations with both friends and strangers, easy journeys- what more could I want?

That sounds like a lovely day - both Sarasa and Puzzler.

I'm just back from the Burns supper, which was very jolly; poetry, good food and wine, excellent speeches and singing (with solo piglet - I gave a rendition of Ye banks and braes, which people seemed to like).

I may have had rather more wine than was wise, so now trying to dilute it with copious volumes of water ...

I can't even cop out of church in the morning, as I'm reading the lessons!

I take it I'm not the only one who occasionally finds themselves sucked into Wikipedia's copious cataloguing of extinct British railway lines and their stations?

Sounds fab, hope the head is OK this morning.

@Baptist Trainfan, I thought of you as I was strolling round the exhibition. I would have stayed longer, but it really wasn't my husband's thing!
@piglet, I hope the water worked and that the reading went OK.
  • PuzzlerPuzzler Shipmate
I would have enjoyed that exhibition too. Just looked at the possibility of getting there by train but it doesn’t look viable for me. I might consider driving when the weather improves, as I see the exhibition is on until 5 May.

    Wet and windy here today.
    Middle twanglet resettled in studentville.
Good catch up with old friend.
Little one still ropey - won't be allowed back to skool until Tuesday at the earliest.
Playing bass at new church this afternoon/evening for the first time.
Lunch is picnic stuff as we were meant to be going to an indoor one at the new shack.
  • I’d also enjoy the railway posters, I love a bit of social history.

Up early this morning as I was hosting an online session on postgraduate mental health and well-being at 10am (we have an online residential programme for our professional doctorate students).

Now having a cup of tea. Mr Heavenly has been trenching the electricity cable to my new office and has found a 1938 farthing, presumably dropped when our house was being built in 1950. I probably need to start putting the kitchen bookcase back in order (moved for the electrician’s access last week).

Ventured out to check the status of the garden. Apart from a couple of scattered watering cans and a lot of twigs on the lawn, all seems fine. Even the garden chairs, which are very light, still standing.

But boy, it's cold. Directly my fingers thaw out I am tipping the veggie drawer into a saucepan and making soup.

It's a horrible day here: cold, wet and windy. I've been to church but scuttled home as soon as I could to turn the heating on, brew coffee and toast a couple of hot cross buns. Mr Nen's been out with his classic car friends but is now on the way home.

We'll be having roast chicken this evening, washed down with a rather nice chardonnay that we started last night while catching up on the final episodes of The Traitors.
  • PigletPiglet All Saints Host, Circus Host
It's a bit parky here too - people were talking about having to de-ice their cars - but it's kept dry so far.

The rehydration worked; I didn't even take any Solpadeine, and felt fine this morning. Readings went fine too - no silly OT names!

I made a pot of chilli yesterday, and when I was adding the crushed chillies, my hand twitched and a whole load fell out! I tried to retrieve as much as I could with a teaspoon, but I suspect it's still going to be rather more fiery than I'd like ... 😳

    We shall see.

  • Cold, wet, and windy AGAIN in Arkland the Drear, with more to come. I shall have to venture out soon to the Co-Op, partly because Essentials are running low, and partly just to get some much-needed Exercise.

A low attendance at Our Place - not surprisingly - aided by the fact that several of our Faithful are actually at Away thus weekend, no doubt enjoying enduring the storms in other parts of the country...

Feeling particularly cold here today... mostly because we ran out of heating oil this morning (the sensor stopped working so we never know how much we've got).
  • What alternative methods of heating do you have?

I am sending warm thoughts, though I appreciate that is on use practical use whatsoever!

I know that catastrophe only too well. Both my manses were oil, and neither had working gauges….. I am so grateful to now live in a place with mains gas.

Today I had to have an MRI scan in Aberdeen so went to church with my son (aka The Giraffe) and his fiance.
  • PigletPiglet All Saints Host, Circus Host
Hope the scan went OK, Cathscats, and doesn't show anything untoward!

Sending further warm thoughts to Arethosemyfeet - I'm reminded of a time in Newfoundland when we were without electricity for three days (in January, when the temperature was just below freezing, in a house with no other heat source). I can't remember what the initial reason for the power cut was (I think an animal had chewed through a line somewhere) but when Newfoundland Power finally got round to switching things back on, they did the other side of our road, but not ours, and David ended up accosting an engineer a couple of streets away, who admitted that they'd forgotten our side of the road!

We've got electric heaters, so we can heat a couple of rooms, but the hallway (and the bathroom!) are none too comfortable.

Sympathy from me- I can't function if I'm cold. Hope it's sorted soon!
  • We have been in this bungalow for 9 years, and every winter Mr RS has wanted to light a fire. Having moved from a house with a big fireplace and an abundant supply of wood, that is not surprising. I, on the other hand, having endured a smoke-laden sitting room for 30+ years , and not wanting our only reception room here filled with smoke from a tiny 1960s grate I have been vocal in my opposition. Yesterday I gave in!

This is a smokeless area, so he can't burn the tree pruning he used to claim were 'dry', and the resultant fire was indeed an improvement, as I could turn the central heating down without him huddling in his. chair like a waif brought in from the storm.
The glowing coals were not as pleasant to watch as the blazing logs, but any smoke actually went up the chimney, not out into the room.
The downside is the the sight of the ash-filled grate which he has yet to clear.
  • BoogieBoogie Heaven Host
We have a wood burner with glass in the door. I love it, no smoke indoors at all. We turn off the heating at 7pm and light the fire. Two logs keep us toasty all evening. Sometimes it gets a touch too warm - 24⁰!
  • I went for a walk this morning in the traditional mixed British weather: sunny blue skies/menacing black clouds/chilly 40 mph winds/pissing down. There was even a rainbow later. But luckily I was inside when the hail started (the man fitting the heat pump to my office was less fortunate with this).

The garden office is in theory completed, with heating and electrics, just a few minor things to sort before we paint and then move my stuff in there.

A busy morning, I did my usual admin then wrote a tutorial on various aspects of public health (social relationships, disease prevention, health promotion) and then this afternoon I prepped for tonight’s 2 hour tutorial on end of life care policy and ethics. I am now having a break and need to go and find some lunch.
  • Arkland the Tempest-toss'd has enjoyed much the same weather today as Heavenlyannieland...

I did manage a brief foray to Tess Coe, and now have some nice KIPPERS for tea later.

Sunny and chilly here this morning. I had my usual early Monday morning start to get to my Pilates class. Afterwards I went for a coffee in the cafe next to the leisure centre before going back for a few games of table tennis with my husband. My dodgy ankle seems to be holding up which is good.
This afternoon I did a bit of gardening, but not for long as it was rather cold and windy and threatening to rain. The rest of the day will be devoted to leisure.

Went to see GP about pain in wrist and why I stopped taking one of my meds. Fortunately he didn't think it was anything permanent, and as a fan of tofu, he was ok with me trying Chinese cuisine in lieu of drugs.

Walked the mile or so home acquiring en route card, scissors, glue, pens, silver polish, meat mallet, noodles, tofu, bamboo steamer and a loaf.

Weather perfectly horrible, cold, wet and windy.

The in-house Burns Supper tonight. I dare say drams will be entered upon.
  • Sunny earlier, turning to cold and wet. I had a funeral to conduct, with burial. Fortunately the rain just about held off for the latter - a couple of minutes more (literally) and we'd all have been soaked.
  • PigletPiglet All Saints Host, Circus Host
Cold and wet in West Lothian too; although I got to work dry, it was raining when I came home and I was glad of the hood on my coat.

My trepidation about coming back to a mountain of work was mercifully unfounded; J had left a couple of voice files, but they weren't very big, and although a few more materialised during the day, I finished the last one at just a couple of minutes after 5 o'clock.

Episode 2 of the chilli for supper; I bought an avocado at lunchtime, and will dress it with a little of M&S's French dressing as an accompaniment, along with a chunk or two of French bread.

I seem to have run out of red WINE  so white will have to do.

Storm Herminia has turned up, and blew harder here than Eowyn, I think. Our balcony is a shocking mess, with the chairs all blown over and flower pots everywhere. I had nightmares during the night. Zombies were involved, as I recall, and husband en rouge informs me I was singing in my sleep (which strikes me as an odd reaction to zombies, but there you go). Any road up, I'm fairly sure the reason for the disrupted sleep was the howling of the tempest, which is Rather Loud 25 floors up.

FOUP for dinner (sundry vegetables cooked with the bone from yesterday's beef and a couple of sprigs of thyme).
  • PigletPiglet All Saints Host, Circus Host
That sounds a bit scary, La Vie - glad to hear you're safe!

    The FOUP sounds good though!
  • It seems to be Storm Herminia who is ravaging Southern England at the moment, although She is not quite so violent as Eowyn.

    For this relief, much thanks.
  • PigletPiglet All Saints Host, Circus Host
I was going to ask how we'd managed to get from Eowyn to Herminia - four named storms in as many days - but I understand they were named by different countries?

Couldn't we have a bit of international co-operation here? 🤔

I think the thing is she’s a bit of a blow for the UK, but not worth depleting the stock of names for, whereas in Spain she’s a full-blown horror.

Sunday's vegan cottage pie was turned into Monday lunchtime's soup and it worked surprisingly well.
I'm out meeting someone to talk about Byron this morning. I am woefully under prepared as I thought we were meeting tomorrow!
