I could see an argument for awarding it, but with the caveat that obviously if the peace doesn't hold they'll have to take it away again. Logic being Trump wouldn't want to lose it and therefore etc
Though obviously that is not the avowed purpose of the award.
Nominations themselves aren't very significant. But I don't know if someone can nominate him again specifically with reference to Israel/Hamas. If so, yeah, someone will probably do it, but it's the Academy that makes the decisions.
The decision is made by the five-member Norwegian Nobel Committee, which is appointed by the Norwegian Parliament (the Storting). Nominations are only received from those specified by the Nobel Foundation as eligible to make nominations. But eligible nominees include members of governments or legislatures, so yeah, someone in that category certainly will nominate him.
Trump was nominated in 2016, 2018, 2019, 2021, 2020, 2022, 2024 and 2025.
Yes, Trump is on it, nominated by Netanyahu, the Government of Pakistan, someone from a US Law School, Buddy Carter, and the Government of Cambodia.

In order for the peace to hold it would first have to exist. Everything about this peace agreement is very vague so far. Hostages and prisoners released, but when? Trump says Monday, but Trump is not in possession of either hostages or prisoners. Will displaced Gazans be allowed to return to what's left of their homes? Reply hazy, try again. If Israel is withdrawing most of its troops from Gaza, what does "most" mean? Is there any provision to rebuild Gaza? Not in any account I've seen so far.
@Nick Tamen I had been meaning to ask you. We had discussed whether the DOJ may get sanctioned. I think you said not likely the department, but individual lawyers from the department may get sanctioned. Correct?
Going back to the temporary restraining order from the federal judge in Portland, blocking the use of federalized Oregon NG troops for the time being, the Trump administration tried to get around that by sending in California troops that had already been federalized. The judge apparently got very ticked off at the government lawyer asking him what part of no does the government not understand.
I have seen reports of that exchange, but only through secondary sources. I would like to see the full transcript of that conversation. Is there a way I can review it? I would assume it is a part of the public record.

The fine detail will no doubt be haggled over and prove sticking points in the time to come, but hopefully the people of Gaza will have a better night than they did last night.

No, not quite correct.
I was responding to your statement that sanctions against the lawyers and/or USDOJ “will likely happen if the DOJ keeps coming up with these revenge cases [like the case against Comey] until a court will say enough. It will likely come through the Virginia Federal District Court, since most of those indictments will be entered there, IMHO.”
What I said was “I see no reason to assume that sanctioning the lawyers (or DOJ) is ‘likely’ to happen soon, much less in Virginia, where the indictment(s) came from the grand jury. It could happen, but I definitely wouldn’t bet on it.”
I was saying that I thought your prediction that sanctions were “likely” in the Comey case was an overly optimistic prediction.

Now, if the President invokes the Insurrection Act, is there any judicial recourse? I note Gov Pritzker of Illinois says all of this federalizing of the NG is a lead up to the midterm elections in which Trump will declare the election under threat so he can send the Guard in to Polling Stations and Counting Centers to seize the ballots and declare the vote null and void.
I've heard other people refer to the midterms, or the next election. Is it generally felt that these are certainties?
Not sure what you're asking -- is it certain that we'll have them? Or is the outcome certain?
We'll have midterm elections. Russia has elections; Putin won 88% of the vote last year. Our elections will be compromised to one degree or another -- people with a right to vote will be purged from electoral rolls without their knowledge, or troops will scare people in certain areas on election day, discouraging them from voting -- but we'll have them.
The outcome is anyone's guess, but this from @Crœsos's third link sounds right on the money:
The idea that the Trumpist party is going to cede power because of a detail like losing an election or two is, in my view, nearly as fantastic at this point as the idea that the Leninists or the Maoists or the Nazis, or the Italian fascists, or Vladimir Putin, or the PRC, would allow themselves to be voted out of power. More precisely in terms of circumstances in America in 2025, it’s as fantastic as the idea that a fundamentalist religious congregation would allow a vote to transform itself into a commune of vegan atheists.
Dominion Voting Systems — the voting machine behemoth that President Trump and his allies baselessly attacked after the 2020 election — has been sold to a Missouri-based company run by a former Republican election official, Axios has learned.
Dominion is one of the biggest election equipment providers and was used by 27 states during the 2024 election.
Liberty Vote purchased Canada-based Dominion for an undisclosed sum, according to a person familiar with the transaction.
Liberty is a new company owned by Scott Leiendecker, who in 2011 created a software program focused on enabling election workers to verify voters and check them in at polling locations.
According to Leiendecker’s LinkedIn page, his company KNOWiNK has more than 150 employees and $55 million in annual revenue.
The company says its systems are used by election officials in more than a third of U.S. states and describes itself as the “nation’s leading provider of electronic poll books.”
Leiendecker also has deep Republican connections.
Matt Blunt, who was then Missouri’s Republican secretary of state, appointed Leiendecker to a role investigating St. Louis’ elections administration after the 2000 election.
As governor, Blunt later appointed Leiendecker to be St. Louis’ Republican election director.
Ed Martin, a loyal Trump surrogate, was St. Louis’ Board of Elections’ chair when Leiendecker was the city’s election director.
It's hard not to paranoid about this sort of thing these days.
I should think not too. Why would you give a peace prize to someone who (a) changes the title of his Secretary of Defence to Secretary of War, despite not actually being at war with anybody; and (b) deploys troops against his own citizens?
The Nobel Peace Prize has a history of controversial choices. Kissinger, for example.
As big a fan as I generally was and am of Obama, I found him a perplexing choice for the Peace Prize. As @Arethosemyfeet suggests, it seemed to have much more to do with political considerations than with actually deserving the prize.

One can certainly argue that Obama won what was essentially the Nobel Prize for Not Being George W. Bush. On the other hand maybe the Committee was simply impressed by Obama and didn't want to wait too long, considering what happened to the last black American recipient of the prize prior to Obama.
Going back to why I posted the image of Obama. He presents a marked contrast to the way of governing than Trump. He tried to use persuasion to move his agenda forward over and against the coercion the current leader is exercising. Obama being granted the Nobel after only a few months in office is a slap in the face to Trump who can rightly claim he fostered a number of peace deals and even brought an end to a widespread out of control pandemic--yes, COVID is still with us, but we can manage it much better. Simply put, though, Obama promotes democracy, Trump is actively destroying it.
To show you just how Obama sticks in Trump's craw could be seen in Trump's recent Oval Office interview. A reporter asked what was Trump's justification for sending the militia into Chicago. Trump replied Chicago has a murder rate of over 4,000 murders over a time period he did not name. I did some sloughing. The closest I could come was during the eight years of the Obama administration, the murders in Chicago were around 3900. It has gone way down since then, thanks to better policing procedures than what was in place years ago. But Trump still thinks it is happening now.
Another point Trump made during that interview was Portland is burning. It is so bad out there (here) that when businesspeople put up stores in Portland, they only build using plywood because they know Antifa will burn it down shortly. Now, I was in Portland a little over a month ago. I did not see any plywood stores or burned-out store fronts. The only news I have seen about the protests was the Naked Bike Ride Portlanders staged yesterday. In sum, it is All Quiet on the Western Front.
And now there is news Trump is trying to piece together a Secret Police Force that answers only to him. Where have I seen this before?
I listened to as much as I could stand of Netanyahu and Trump speeches in the Israeli parliament. What a load of sycophantic rubbish from the pair of them. Talk about a love-in! There seemed to be no awareness about what had happened to the poor residents of Gaza. I am glad that the prisoners have been returned to their families in Israel, but what about all the tragedies in Gaza where thousands of people have lost their lives due to Israeli aggression? I weep in grief.

I took this:

to refer to the numerous examples throughout history of authoritarian governments using secret police to quell their opposition.

As did I. But I wasn't sure why @Hugal would assume @Gramps49 only meant the USA.
Sorry I have been incognito for a while. I can see Trump trying to use a secret police force world wide. Look at the number of alleged and I do mean alleged drug boats he has ordered sunk. Want to know where the Proud Boys and the III percenters and their ilk are? Look to the ICE people.

Yes I wasn’t sure if it meant just US history or the competing it to other regimes the world has known.

Some may claim that the US Government has operated a secret police force around the world for decades. CIA.
The CIA: Fucking shit up in other countries since 1947. And occasionally at home.
On a happier note, the No Kings protests went well today and reportedly were bigger than the ones in June. I ran into bunches of people from the church I worked for and the one I used to attend.
Missed the no kings protest here today. We were traveling from our kids place in Western WA back home. Did go under a pedestrian walkway over I90 that had protesters on it. Honked as we went by. Understand there were 800 protesters in Pullman.

Estimates are coming in at 7 million people! I went to a protest in one of the suburbs, along with several friends that I sing with, and we ran into other choir members as well, similar to what Ruth described. It had a real “community “ feel to it, with kids and dogs and people in costumes, flags, hilarious and clever signs. This one drew hundreds of people.
The march in downtown Chicago had 250,000 people and stretched for two miles. The whole Chicago area has been hit hard with ICE raids and atrocities, and I think the remarkable turnouts through the area are a testament to how furious we are.
And there are reports of wonderful turnouts in Red states as well, even in small towns. Good for them! And thanks to everyone outside the US who marched and demonstrated as well.
We were not able get to the local No Kings rally as we both had preexisting obligations, but friends went, and we heard it was bigger than the one in June. Or daughter went where she was and said it was very well attended—no surprise where she is. I haven’t talked with our son, who lives in DC, so I don’t know if he went to the one there.

More to the point, he's depicted himself shitting on America. There's a level of honesty you don't often see in a politician (or, more likely, whoever he has doing his social media feed).
It is impossible to be surprised any longer. When times call for an encouraging, unifying speech from a statesman, the country gets the equivalent of a bog wall graffito from a senile delinquent. And there is no reason to hope for better.

And the flag!
But I'm guessing they think they showed him shitting on protestors.
We should not overlook the incident that happened near Camp Pendleton, a Marine base near San Diego, CA. It was ostensibly an exercise--a simulated beach landing-- to celebrate the 250th anniversary of the Marines, although it just happened to be scheduled during the time the No Kings rally were being held. The Marines had proposed firing live artillery rounds over the I5 freeway, the busiest North/South freeway in the West. They claimed nothing would happen, everyone would be safe. Gov. Newsom disagreed. He ordered 17 miles of the freeway closed during the exercise. JD Vance and Pete Hegseth were in attendance. JD pooh poohed Newsoms decision. Guess what? Several of the live rounds exploded prematurely and sprayed shrapnel on a California Highway Patrol car. A CHIP motorcycle patrolman also said it sounded like metal rain falling along the freeway.
The exercise was terminated.
Good one, Pete.
Camp Pendleton has other areas which could have been used for live round exercises where the public would not have been endangered. Why weren't these used?
If this had happened during the Obama or Biden administration, Congress would be up in arms. Now? crickets.

Elon Musk has also been nominated.

If they really wanna flip the bird to Trump, they should give it to the January 6th Committee.

Obama didn't deserve the Nobel Peace Prize either.
Well, the Nobel Committee thought he did.
It was well known at the time that the prize was given largely in relief at seeing the back of Dubya.

Did @Gramps49 post something there that made it sound like he was talking about the whole world?
As did I. But I wasn't sure why @Hugal would assume @Gramps49 only meant the USA.
Yes I wasn’t sure if it meant just US history or the competing it to other regimes the world has known.
On a happier note, the No Kings protests went well today and reportedly were bigger than the ones in June. I ran into bunches of people from the church I worked for and the one I used to attend.

I can’t open that without an account
Thing of it is, he cannot even wear the facemask properly.
I note he confirmed that he’s full of shit.
More to the point, he's depicted himself shitting on America. There's a level of honesty you don't often see in a politician (or, more likely, whoever he has doing his social media feed).
And the flag!
But I'm guessing they think they showed him shitting on protestors.
The exercise was terminated.
Good one, Pete.
Camp Pendleton has other areas which could have been used for live round exercises where the public would not have been endangered. Why weren't these used?
If this had happened during the Obama or Biden administration, Congress would be up in arms. Now? crickets.
