  • The day out today was to. a very wet Abergavenny. It comes to something when the highlight of your day out is shopping in Waitrose.

Choral society social today in the form of a quiz evening, with fish and chips. I helped to set up the hall this afternoon and attended this evening. Slightly awkward in that I had invited two non-choir guests but tables had a maximum of six, so they ended up sitting elsewhere in another team. My team came last. I think our interests and skills were not broad enough. After all, four of us have degrees in French! My granddaughter and her boyfriend came as scorers, which they seemed to enjoy. It also got me a lift there and back. A fun evening with good company.

No church choir needed in the morning so I hope to have a lie-in.

I hadn't realised that the rather soullessly named Greater London had absorbed parts of Kent.

@LatchKeyKid, I was born in Bromley, which was once a separate town to London, but is now very much a suburb. Before I moved to the East Midlands I lived in Kingston-upon Thames, which again had once been part of Surrey, but is now a London borough.
I've actually seen some sun this morning which is a rare treat at the moment. The river is still rising, but more slowly. I hope we get less rain in the next few days and it can go back down again.
  • It happens all over the UK; my south Cambridgeshire village, complete with village sign, is now a suburb of Cambridge.

Grey with rain later here. I should really go for a walk but I have at least done the weekly online shop.
  • A quiet, grey, but mild day in Arkland the Dull, where nothing much is happening. Aromatic wood-smoke is drifting lazily from the chimneys of several Arks, imparting a homely and comforting sort of aspect to the gentle melancholy of a winter's afternoon.

Lunch is CHICKEN in MUSHROOM SAUCE, with NEW SPUDS.
    :yum:

The second of Mr D's APPLE CRUMBLES will be devoured later.

I was born just down the road, in what was then called Farnborough Hospital but appears now to be called Princess Royal University Hospital. They seem to have demolished and rebuilt it without asking me.

We went to morning service at Our Place and then went to lunch with some friends and had a most lovely time at their house eating our way through canapés, soup, roast lamb, chocolate mousse and cheese and biscuits, finishing up with coffee and chocolates, and having a good catch up with them. We've known them for years but haven't seen them for ages. They live in quite a rural area, over the road from a delightful little village church, on a lane lined with snowdrops.

My mum had several appointments at the Princess Royal @Nenya. It was all quite swish. I was born in a small maternity hospital that is no longer there at all.
So far we seem to have escaped the rain today, which is just as well as the river is still on the rise. A few more centimetres and we'll have a soggy garden.
We headed out to a garden centre this afternoon which made us feel rather ancient as we didn't think we actually needed anything, just fancied a trip somewhere. It was actually useful as we go some ideas for planting by the long run of fence we have and I picked up some secateurs. The ones we originally had are ancient and not very good and the ones my son bought me as a present were worse. I hope the new pair do the job.

I've had a busy but enjoyable weekend: on Saturday Scottish Voices were singing Evensong for Candlemas in Dunfermline Abbey, which was absolutely baltic, but we sang some very nice stuff. Afterwards had drinks with some of the choir and then v. good supper in an Italian restaurant.

Today would have been my late brother-in-law's birthday, and tomorrow is the anniversary of his death, and there was a gathering of most of the family at my sister's this afternoon, which also included FOOD, in this case a rather nice Indian takeaway. It was the first time I'd seen them since New Year, so we had a nice catch-up.

I actually managed to get to my Pilates class today which was a good thing. I came home via the Town Hall to pick up some stuff for a visit I'm doing tomorrow and to chat to a member of staff about a visit to our Twinning Town in Germany in May. The rest of the day has been pretty lazy, though I'm keeping an eye on the floods. Our road is currently an island surrounded by flooded fields. However it hasn't really rained today so I hope it starts going down very soon.
I need to go and start sorting out what I'm cooking for tea tonight, some sort of curry that involves cauliflower is on the card, and prepare for my book group tonight. It's on-line so at least I don't have to go very far!
  • Grey and mild again in Arkland the Dull, though this sort of quiet weather suits me nicely. Tess Coe this lunchtime, followed by restage in preparation for Pilates tomorrow - I wasn't well enough for last week's session, but don't like to miss any sessions if I can help it...

I realised today that I am like unto an elderly Rhinoceros, inasmuch as I graze throughout the day and evening, rather than eat Proper Meals™. So far, I've had a Ham Sandwich, some CHEESE on TOAST, and an Orange, and will later partake of Vegetable Spring Rolls, a bowl of Onion SOUP, and a Fruity Flapjack or two (Co-Op speciality! :yum: ).

  • Usual Monday morning of admin followed by the monthly mental health research group and then planning my feedback structure for my next batch of marking which arrives later this week. So the calm before the storm. I’m also teaching a study skills tutorial (essay writing) this evening so prepped for that.
Tea will be haddock but I am not sure what I want to do with it. I might leave it for Mr Heavenly to do while I teach.
  • For those of who remember her, @Ethne Alba is doing pretty well. What has been lost cannot be got back, but she is making the most of what is left. Radio and various podcasts are her joy. Alterations have been made to the house to give her a ground floor room opening on to the patio. In the summer!!

Best wishes to those who remember me. I'm still here! (@91)

Today was actually rainless with a few intervals of what could pass for sunlight. I would like to have gone out and started tidying the garden but less than two weeks post-op might be a bit soon.

I do find the need for some diversion greater than crocheting and watching people slide off mountains.
  • PigletPiglet All Saints Host, Circus Host
Try to resist doing too much, Firenze, and use your strength for getting well.

@Thomasina - lovely to see you and thanks for the update on @Ethne Alba!

Busy day at work today; J and B had both been in overdrive at the weekend. Then home to do the laundry that didn't get done yesterday, and cook a STEAK for supper.
  • Damp and dismal again in Arkland the Bedrizzled - apparently, it's rained in the UK every day for the past six weeks...

Still, I had a good Pilates session, and the mild weather has brought out the crocuses on a grassy bank near the Torture Chamber. A cheering sight, even through the murk.

CHEESE on TOAST for lunch, and there is a LAMB STEAK (with Chips) for tea.

Great to see you @Thomasina and thank you for the update on @Ethne Alba . Glad she is doing ok.

Make sure you look after yourself @Firenze .

Mr Nen and I did our Pilates class yesterday afternoon and it was Difficult - I couldn't do it all and my knees and legs and back are complaining today.

I had a really nice coffee and catch up with a friend this morning. I haven't seen her properly for years, but we used to see each other very regularly as our children are the same age and went to the same schools, and we also worked together as dinner ladies* for some years in our children's primary school. (*The "Do you want gravy with that, love?" sort, not the "I don't care who started it, you must play nicely" sort.) If we end up moving one of the things I will really miss is seeing friends with whom I share that kind of history.

I got wet on the way home and am glad I don't have to go out again. Being a Domestic Goddess I got the slow cooker on before I left the house this morning and we'll soon be enjoying the fruits of my labours as Mr Nen, unlike me, is out this evening.
  • Thank you for popping in with an update on Ethne Alba, Thomasina. Best wishes to you both.

Drizzly the afternoon and evening but this morning was pleasant, with bird song and the sighting of early daffodils. Spring will be here soon.
I’ve done a little work this morning and then wrote a paragraph of my dissertation this afternoon (how Puritanism removed the use of astrology from humoral medicine, only for religious healing to then be challenged by Enlightenment rationalism).
Tea is chicken, possibly a cassoulet. I haven’t cooked it yet.

A bit dreich in West Lothian, par for the course on my birthday. I was serenaded by three of my colleagues, and given a card and a bottle of Oyster Bay.

Aside from that, a fairly busy Tuesday, but I arrived home to find a parcel on the doorstep from David's sister containing a bottle of Shiraz and some nice-looking CHEESE and crackers.

These people all know me too well! 🙂🍷

How did I get to be 64???
  • SarasaSarasa All Saints Host
    Happy Birthday @Piglet. What a thoughtful sister-in-law.
I spent the morning in a local school hearing about their construction GCSE course which was interesting and this afternoon having coffee with friends followed by a zoom meeting with my local political party. I now feel fit for nothing but crawling into bed with a good book.
River levels are still high, and if there wasn't a flood bank between us and the river our house would be flooded. The levels are going down, but rain appears to be forecast for the next fortnight, so I can well see them going up again.
  • Happy birthday, Piglet.
  • Seconded!

64 is the new 54, BTW...

Next door has a large puddle in the garden, so I guess we'll be getting one soon. The good news is the river is going down at the moment, the bad news is its been raining rather heavily this morning so it may well rise again.
We were going Rambling, but chickened out when we saw the weather. We both have a few busy days coming up, so have decided today will be devoted to housework and our hobbies. We have done an exercise video though.

Mission accomplished - cheque from D's pension provider now in my bank account - even if it won't clear for a few weeks!

Shame it's such a manky day; I might have enjoyed a little amble round the shops. As it was, I went into a bar called Tiles, and had a perfectly decent Chicken Balmoral and a glass of Yealand Sauvignon Blanc and pootled back to Waverley. Now nearly home. 🙂
  • NenyaNenya All Saints Host, Ecclesiantics & MW Host
Sorry to be a day late; happy birthday for yesterday @Piglet . That's good about the cheque.

I had coffee with a good friend this morning and then did some errands. The afternoon was dedicated to the ongoing sorting which is happening at Casa Nen and with which I am Thoroughly Fed Up. Crawling into bed with my book is the next job on the list.
  • A long and busy day here. I did my admin and wrote a tutorial on referencing this morning, marked essays on end of life care this afternoon and taught a tutorial on essay writing this evening.
Mr Heavenly was away in London today and I couldn’t be bothered to cook so my tea was a comforting bowl of porridge before teaching! He’s just walked in and then gone straight out to the pub so I might have a glass of wine and open a packet of biscuits.
  • SarasaSarasa All Saints Host
Our lazy day was good. The house got cleaned and aired, we did two exercise videos and a spot of gardening. I managed to sort out some knitting and my husband caught up with various things too.
Tomorrow we both have busy days. Husband is driving to Yorkshire to see a friend and then has a zoom meeting in the evening. I have lip reading in the morning, bookshop shift in the afternoon and a church social in the evening. My neighbour across the road is driving me to the social which is a good thing, as much as I like the walk to church it isn't that much fun in the dark.

Hope you break the back of the sorting soon @nenya.

Your "lazy" day doesn't sound a bit lazy to me!! 😳

When I got home from Edinburgh I flopped on the sofa and fell asleep. Woke just after 5 o'clock, and couldn't work out why it was light outside - at first I honestly thought it was 5 a.m.!

Having had a fairly late and substantial lunch, I just had a few crackers and CHEESE for supper. I'll probably be ravenous in the morning ...
  • Quite busy yesterday - an online meeting for half the morning, conducting a funeral in the afternoon, a Church Council meeting in the evening. When I got home we watched the ice dancing from Milano.

This morning I went shopping, got on the bus to come home which promptly died! So I walked round to another stop and fortunately got a bus there quite quickly. (I could of course have simply walked home!)

Scrabble yesterday then choral society. The person I always sit next to has developed very poor hearing and though she is very musical and a good sight reader, she seems unaware that she is no longer singing in tune, and fails to annotate her score with the DM’s breath marks etc. I have been wanting to say something for some time and last night the opportunity arose. The DM was giving us a number of changes to the words and she wasn’t writing anything in. After I helped her to catch up I gently suggested that as she seemed to be missing so much maybe she should get her hearing checked. As I expected, she was somewhat upset and retorted that she had lots of other expenses right now. I fear I have really upset her, but I’m sure she knows the truth. I hope I have not lost a good friend.
  • Oh dear - these things (like suggesting that someone should give up driving) are so hard.
  • BoogieBoogie Heaven Host
You have been a good friend to her by gently telling her @Puzzler. I hope she appreciates you.

I should be at an art group today, but my Labrador, Tatze, was sick several times during the night so I'm staying home to keep an eye on her. I'm sure it was just something she ate, she's a terror for picking things up from under hedges, etc.

I'll do my painting at home. I'm fencing a nice abstract. Seascape 🙂
  • SarasaSarasa All Saints Host
Oh dear @puzzler. Your friend wouldn't need to go to any expense to get hearing aids as they are available on the NHS, though she'd probably have a wait to be seen. Maybe someone who wears aids could raise the topic with her? I assume if it is the choral society the director may be having words about it soon anyway.
I hope Taize recovers soon @boogie, and you enjoy your painting at home.
So glad you got your cheque paid in @piglet, and that there are not too many piles of files waiting for you at work this morning.
  • PuzzlerPuzzler Shipmate
Thanks for the reassuring comments. I think there may be a long wait for NHS hearing aids in this area. However, it would seem like money well spent if she chooses to get them privately. No chance of the DM saying anything, though he will have noticed, but this is an unauditioned choir and he doesn’t engage with individuals.

Out to the hairdresser for an overdue cut. Caught in a shower of actual sleet. Now home and dry and thinking What colour soup? Yesterday was orange (carrot and roasted pepper), before that, green (cabbage and celery). The default is usually beige sludge.

Not been to the barber since the start of the pandemic. Been cutting my own hair ever since. Was thinking about doing it, but was thinking that I'll be to blame if we then incur a cold snap.

Weather looks like it might be dry on Saturday, so trying to plot somewhere to walk that won't be a quagmire. Might try a bimble around Greenham Common.

  • My late Ma camped out on Greenham Common for a while, many years ago (let the Reader understand).

Another mild and grey day in Arkland the Drizzly, where They don't seem to be able to make up Their minds as to whether to let it rain, or not. Never mind - good enough to allow for some S&Q.

Post-Pilates aches kept me on board the Ark yesterday, but I was able to get to Tess Coe today, and now have supplies of Essentials - which means I won't have to go Shopp Ing again until Saturday.

Lunch was CHICKEN in MUSHROOM SAUCE with NEW POTATOES.

Cold here and the sky is a very dark grey at the moment, but no rain as yet today, though some is forecast. The river is almost down to normal, if high, levels and the puddle in my neighbour's garden has disappeared and our own garden has escaped without any puddles at all. I'm not holding my breath though. The weather looks very wet for the foreseeable future so I expect the river to rise again, with the knock on effects for the dyke at the bottom of our garden.
Had my usual lip reading, and bookshop shift day and I'm now home for a couple of hours of laziness before the church social tonight. I don't really know that many people at church so this should be an opportunity to meet a few more.

I got invited to do a talk to a group my neighbour is involved in - loosely based around my life in archaeology. She didn't really give me much information about them, but it turned out to be a dementia group and their carers. Fortunately, I'd designed the talk to be pretty flexible, to follow what they wanted to talk about, and I got quite a few interesting questions, and went off on a few wild tangents (like the Wrexham Lager Brewery!) and everyone seemed to enjoy themselves. They even gave me a fish and chip lunch afterwards.
The group meets in a very nice modern Baptist church, though several of the volunteers are Catholic, and they're all lovely people.
I hope I get invited back sometime to do a talk about something else!
  • PigletPiglet All Saints Host, Circus Host
    That sounds lovely, Eigon!

Puzzler, I think you did the right thing. I was in denial about my hearing loss for a while, until my family got fed up of having to repeat things, fortissimo! Luckily, my sense of pitch seems to have stayed with me: if I couldn't sing, I'd be absolutely wretched.
Some of Firenze's sleet made it to Linlithgow at lunchtime, so I was glad to have brought lunch with me. I actually spent part of my lunch break discussing my Will and Power of Attorney with L, one of the bosses, having been putting it off for ages. She suggested, not unreasonably, that I go ahead and type the POA without any dictation, as it's just a case of filling in the blanks, and she would dictate the Will, which is a bit more involved.
Having checked the electricity meter this morning, I decided it would be prudent to pootle up to the Post Office after work and top up the wand: it was down below £10, and I wouldn't want to run out.
Supper was pasta with prawns and green things.
  • SarasaSarasa All Saints Host
Glad the talk went well @Eigon, and that you had a good time with the family @nenya.
I didn't stay long at the church social. There was very little there I could eat and I couldn't hear what anyone was saying. I must try harder to actually meet the other church members but that probably wasn't the right event to start with.
  • No yoga this morning so I caught up on my emails and admin and then this afternoon I finished the thesis chapter I’ve been writing. It is about a thousand words longer than I expected but it’s done. I’m 2 weeks behind my research plan but I’m relaxed about that. I will be spending the weekend reading my key primary source (a short medical text by an eighteenth century Mad-doctor) and then next week I can get start tackling the next chapter which is based around it.
Tea was about using up the contents of the fridge so we had fried chicken hearts, chicken livers, mushrooms and spinach, served in cream.
We’ve just got back from the weekly bible study where we sang 3 worship songs and then looked at Genesis 3 (we currently have a sermon series on Genesis).

The carrot and roasted pepper soup sounds good, as we happen to have both waiting to be used up. Any other key ingredients we should know about?
  • Went last night to an excellent lecture and discussion on Christianity and Nationalism in a Welsh context. It was delivered in Welsh but with very good simultaneous translation.

You took me back to my childhood @Baptist Trainfan when my dad was a minister in Soweto. Some of his services were translated into six languages - and definitely not simultaneous! The services were long, us kids happily mauled about on the floor.
