I was privileged to see two confirmation services remotely this past weekend.
The first was in Lourdes where the (RC) bishop of the French Armed forces administered the sacrament to about 50 members of th Armed Forces .After the anointing the bishop placed his hand on the arm of each candidate as he congratulated them.
The second was in Salzburg where the archbishop confirmed about 30 teenagers. This time he placed his hand on the head of each candidate after the anointing.
In both places the sponsors placed their hand on the shoulder of the candidate.
In Salzburg, however, a good number of the teenage candidates had to be reminded to show the bishop the card with their confirmation name written on it.
  • At St. Leo's, there was no exchange of cards -- the bishop simply asked each candidate what their "saint's name" was. He had to ask several to repeat themselves, as their timid voices were barely audible. Two of the Hispanic boys took Jesus as their name. Another boy took John Paul. One girl took Lourdes.
