Thank you @Doc Tor for highlighting this poem and thereby signposting me to read about the Peterloo massacre. (My knowledge of history is woefully lacking).
I read that after Peterloo the govt enacted the Six Acts with the aim of suppressing further protests.
It seems history is repeating itself.
In Moscow more than 900 people have been arrested in anti-war protests and over 400 in St Petersburg.
If there were anti-war protests in London there could also be arrests. Can you believe this????

There is a big difference between "could" and "would".

True, ish. There is a gap but it's not a big one.
Can you imagine, the UK government denying the opportunity to work to, removing access to healthcare from, removing the right to a home, and even deporting, their own citizens? I can.
And I remain deeply saddened that Windrush remains a small thing for so many of us. It is a deeply shocking episode.
Now, are you really trying to tell me that this Conservative government wouldn't use draconian measures to stop protests?
I stick with my description of the difference between "would" and "could" as being big.
What I can quickly find out about Windrush, I find it hard to see any relevance between what happened there and what is happening in Ukraine. I note that there was what Wiki describes as an independent review, and a compensation scheme, neither of which is likely to be set up by Putin.

You have heard about the recent legislation this government is bringing in right?
My reference to Windrush was just to point out that this government has form for abusing power. And is in the process of giving themselves much more power to curtail protests.
Yes, in the UK, in the very near future, the law will allow arrest and detaining of protesters. And currently in government is a party who completely trampled on the human rights of their own people within the last decade.
The gap between 'could' and 'would' is not that big. Surely, if Trump has taught us anything, it is that freedom and democracy is not as secure as we like to tell ourselves.

The big difference is that the protesters in Russia are brave

Indeed! As someone from the U.S., I think Trump taught us that a lot of things that "are not done!" can actually be done. And indeed Republicans are doing a lot to damage our freedom of assembly here. Still, if enough people protest notice will be taken no matter what the laws are.

No, I haven't, right or wrong. No doubt the UK government has a legislative programme, but that's not exactly headline news here.
I assume alienfromzog meant this kind of thing: https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/newsbeat-59651523
Thank you.
Sorry, I'd forgotten where you are in the world.
I was referring to the current Policing and Crime Bill that is going through Parliament. It all but bans peaceful protest in the UK.
The proposed law also includes an offence of "intentionally or recklessly causing public nuisance". There's a bit of sophistry from the government claiming that this power is not a problem because it would only be used in a reasonable way.

The big difference is that the protesters in Russia are brave
Mainly because they are protesting in the safe UK
Ever heard of the Tolpuddle Martyrs?
Safer than Ukraine or Russia
