I keep changing my starter words, trying different strategies. I decided to google for the order of the most common letters in five letter words. I found the trouble with lists of most common letters is there are several different lists - such as the most common in regular prose (where certain words, like 'the', get repeated a lot), and the most common in the dictionary (which is more relevant to individual, isolated words - but even then, words of different lengths might have different most common letters).

When I first started doing Wordle, I didn't think there would be a list of most common letters in five letter words, but the other day I figured someone must have worked it out by now, considering the popularity of Wordle, so I googled and they had. So my starter words are now AROSE and UNTIL. And from working through the Wordle archives, they seem my best strategy so far, though of course there are times when it makes more sense to omit the second one.

Nerdle is more interesting to me at the moment, as I'm curious how hard it can get. I've so far found it more straightforward than Wordle, and I think I have a good strategy, but a friend who is really into stats and analysing tells me it depends on the numbers.

231 4/6 but I have no idea how that numerical score was calculated. Can anyone explain?

Thanks for the game. My wife is hooked too and we're both happy to be restricted to one game per day.

This game is similar but much easier than one we made up for long road trips and when camping. It is based on the game Mastermind where one person places four (or five) colored pegs in a set up something like a cribbage board. Then the other person guesses a combination which the first person scores like this: a black peg for a colored peg in the right location, a white peg for a colored peg that is out of place. The game we made up is played with words and scored like Mastermind: how many in the right place and how many are in the word but out of place. So no information about which letter in the guessed word has received which score.

Our game requires note taking unless the word length is 3 or 4 letters and even then you can't worry about the number of guesses without note taking or tediously slow play. Wordle is better.

231 4/6 means you solved Wordle number 231 in 4 out of the maximum 6 tries.

    ETA: Cross-posted with @Net Spinster.

  • 4/6 is not a possible time signature. The bottom number must be a multiple of 2.

I have discovered Quordle, which I am finding more fun than Wordle - it seems to require more strategy, or at least a different sort of strategy, as you're finding four words in one game, with nine tries. And then, from a misspelling of Quordle when googling for it, I also found Queerdle. I couldn't think of any queer-related seven-letter words - even general seven-letter words took me a while, after being used to finding five-letter ones! - so I just chose any old words, with good letter combinations, at least, and then got it from that.

MarkD, I actually used to have the word version of Mastermind with lots of letters instead of coloured pegs. It was tougher, too, as you only knew how many letters were correct, not which ones. But then again you had more guesses.

Took me all six goes on Wordle today - so infuriating when you've got four out of the five letters quite early but there are lots of options for the fifth! Cheered myself up by getting the German one in three.

Where do I start with this?

Are you thinking that 6 is not a multiple of 2? 'cause last time I checked, ...

But let's assume that you meant "power of two" ;) I'd agree that that was the norm, but that doesn't mean that 4/6 is impossible: just rather unusual. It gives you triplet quarter notes as a beat, with 4 of them in a bar. It's probably the kind of nonsense you're more likely to find in the odd bar or two bridging two sections together, rather than as the time signature for a whole piece.
