India, South Africa and New Zealand will make the last 4. The other place is still up for grabs.
  • England-Sri Lanka just finished. I believe that match could be a textbook definition of "a shambles."
  • Indeed. Polite words fail me so I shall comment no further.
  • It's still nice to watch a bit of cricket out of season.
  • I for one am looking forward to the England-Netherlands match on Nov. 8. It is always nice to see two equally matched teams squaring off against each other. :innocent:

Extraordinary match between Afghanistan and Australia.
  • Extraordinary match between Afghanistan and Australia.

Maxwell put on a 'Big Show' but he's not Mr Reliable.
  • What an innings, maybe the best one day innings.

A "Big Show" was exactly what was required in this case though!
  • The final was fantastic and I sat up all night so as not to miss a moment. I am thrilled with Australia's win although I really expected India would have triumphed.

Once again a Commonwealth team wins the cup so His Majesty is happy.

India had to have at least one bad outing and the Aussie bowlers were outstanding.

  • India easily won the league, but failed to win the cup.

Isn't India part of the Commonwealth?

Yes. We gave cricket to the Empire.
  • After Day 2, I am thinking that the third Test between India & England is shaping up to be a good 'un!

Very much so. The next session will go a very long way to deciding the shape of this test.
  • Of course, I could be wrong......
  • TurquoiseTasticTurquoiseTastic Kerygmania Host
Well, no, you were right, it was shaping up to be a good 'un, but unfortunately it wasn't! Well, not for England anyway. It was for several Indian players!
  • TurquoiseTasticTurquoiseTastic Kerygmania Host
Although I mustn't be greedy - the first Test was one of the most amazing matches of all time from anyone's perspective, particularly an England supporter's....

    A very reasonable assumption.

However, if Hartley and Wood, hadn't scored a few boundaries, it would have been even more embarrassing.

The batting lacks consistency and some of the bowlers lack experience. They should not be learning their craft in test matches. That's what we have county cricket for.

I'm still very much a novice at cricket, but going from 175-4 to 183-8 is generally not considered good for the batting team, right?

Still, it IS cricket, so I know things can turn around in the second innings.
  • You are quite right, Hedgehog! It's not good.

It's not good but it's not that unusual. Once the vasr majority of your best batters are out, the innings can collapse quickly.

It is a real collapse, and given that the last few of any team are not there for their batting ability, augurs badly for the innings. You're right that "things can turn around" in the second innings, but from what you say overall, a good recovery looks unlikely.
  • HedgehogHedgehog Shipmate
We are beyond unlikely at this point. That was quite a 3-Day Wonder.
  • TelfordTelford Shipmate
Just not good enough. Crawly did OK but still only averaged 40. Slow bowlers took wickets but were very expensive

Sorry, I know it is not Test, but I don't often get to brag about USA Cricket:

USA beats Pakistan in T20 World Cup match

Admittedly, Pakistan was not playing at the top of their form. Some really sloppy stuff. One might quibble whether USA deserved the win, but Pakistan certainly deserved the loss.

USA also won its opening match against Canada--made more memorable by Canada allowing 33 runs in the 14th over.

Both matches were played at the decent Texas facility, not that one in New York with the questionable pitch.
  • Two wins on the trot must make the group look very interesting indeed!

England are playing West Indies. Test Matches should never start on Wednesday, This game is not a timeless test and may even be over before the two most popular days
  • TelfordTelford Shipmate
Game finishes early on 3rd day. I realise that England like to win but the crowd buy tickets to be entertained. Perhaps England should have batted first.

Congratulations to Jimmy Anderson on his very long test career and achievements. As well as being an excellent cricketer he's a nice modest man who loves the game

  • A shed load of runs so far in the current test match in Pakistan. 1,531 runs scored after 4 days and it's not a timeless test. I can't see many more being scored though.
Well done to the Yorkshire boys.
  • Wow Mitch! 🏏🇦🇺🇮🇳
  • 🇦🇺 445 🇮🇳 3/22 (or 22/3 if you're that way inclined 😉) at lunch on 4th day. 1st day lost to rain.
  • Meanwhile on t'other side of the Ditch/Dutch, our Kiwi mates are pommelling the poms
  • MPaulMPaul Shipmate
Felt Crawley got a roughee there. Must be a bit of doubt re a call like that
But England 18/2 chasing 640 for the win with 2 days to play. Do they play for the draw. Be cricketing history to win or draw methinks.

Something tells me England aren't going to win this one!!

Matt Henry has absolutely got Crawley's number, hasn't he?
  • Onya Blackcaps! 🇳🇿

And only 🌧️ can save 🇮🇳
  • Onya Blackcaps! 🇳🇿

And only 🌧️ can save 🇮🇳

Given that India are still in in their first innings on session 3 of day 4, I suspect that time left in the match will save them as much as the rain.

Great turnaround by NZ, though frustrating as an England supporter that we canned it so monstrously in our first innings. Bazball is great when it works, but dreadful when it doesn't. The middle and lower order often seem to be able to hold together an innings, but if the first four wickets fall for stuff all, that's a lot of catching up to do.
  • MPaulMPaul Shipmate
Well NZ save face after 2 embarrassing performances where they looked outclassed. Not sure about winning the toss and putting a side in. Stokes might rue that call and his niggly hammy.
  • Still got the women's Test vs South Africa to listen to, though. Lots of cricket on the radio has been a sanity saver this winter.

Umpires call is just down to luck most of the time. It would be simplier for the 3rd umpire to give it out if the ball is judged to be hitting.
    We would then have consistency.

In theory England should attempt to bat normally.

I think England may have to look for a new capatin. If Stokes is not an allrounder, he's not worth his place. Perhaps they should call up another youngster from County cricket who has never scored a first class 100.

  • MPaulMPaul Shipmate
Yep, I hear you. The diff in this series was Brook. When he played well England looked awesome. Stokes is inspirational but no ‘body’ lasts in sport. For the kiwis, Santner was the game changer..they never picked him in the first 2 games. Good series win for England and it was great to see the ‘barmy army’ in action. I think test cricket is getting harder and harder for the players as they have to jump mindsets when in different iterations of the game..not sure bazball is the answer but it looks great when it comes off as @Sandemaniac said.
  • MPaulMPaul Shipmate
In other news India vs Aussie is set up nicely with a game each and now a rain-affected draw in Brisbane.
  • TurquoiseTasticTurquoiseTastic Kerygmania Host
The Australia - India series is nicely poised. Will be interesting to see what happens in Melbourne and Sydney.
  • I don't want to jinx him, but wow, Sam Konstas! 🏏🇦🇺🇮🇳
  • Bumrah is def throwing. Watch how his arm bends and straightens in the second rotation of his cartwheel action.
  • MPaulMPaul Shipmate
It is a really unusual action for sure. The commentary analysis suggested his snap of the wrist creates his pace not an elbow flex. I always thought Muraliduran of Siri Lanka was a chucker but in the end they gave him a pass.
