  • "The Snow Lay on the Ground." Hardly ever hear it. Love the bouncy melody.

This has to be one of the greatest Christmas songs

Radio 4 this morning had a choir singing O Little Town of Bethlehem to the tune of The Archers theme. Best thing I’ve heard for ages.

Thanks for that, Spike ... 🙃

It was on Broadcasting House at about 1:04:50
  • Does anyone else think See Amid The Winter's Snow (yes, yes, consider it metaphorical rather than meteorological snow) is underused?

    Yes, I do.

I sort of associate it with the less well-attended services (like Christmas morning in a church where the Midnight Mass or 9L&C is the "big one").

It's got quite a few verses, and with the refrains in between, it's quite a long sing. Kind of in the same category as The first nowell, if you see what I mean.

It wouldn't make it into my top 20, but it's OK.

Yes, not often sung ime but I do rather like it
  • It's a good one if you are not having turkey and going with an alternative meat for Christmas.

    See, the tender lamb appears...

    Mmmm... lamb...
  • :yum:

It's a usefully long Offertory hymn, if Your Place is the sort which needs time to prepare the altar, swing the incense etc. etc., especially if you've already had While shepherds watched for that purpose at a previous service.

Mind you, Of the Father's love begotten is IMHO a much better choice, but that, too, perhaps, is not particularly well-known.

That's going to cost a few years in Purgatory...

Yes, I do too, together with my favourite "In the Bleak Midwinter". I've tried to explain to Mr Nen and to others who huff and puff about the fact that it wasn't winter and it wasn't snowy that it's a metaphorically bleak and frosty place into which the one whom cherubim worship night and day comes as a baby. He and they look at me as though I'm going mad.

(Similarly, "If I were a shepherd, I would bring a lamb.")

  • I bought some Minted Lamb Steaks at Tesco earlier today...
    😱

A post from @Enoch on the Don't Like thread reminded me of a version of While Shepherds Watched which I do like, but haven't sung in years:

Bethlehem Down by Peter Warlock (if you google A Time of Peace by Belfast Cathedral Choir* it's on there).

    Agreed, this is so underknown

Closing this now as we are well past Old Christmas Day. Perhaps we will have another next year, but for now, this goes where all good threads go.
