I occasionally watch cycling races - mostly with the commentary turned off - because the filming of the French (or Italian or Spanish) countryside is so well done. I'm in awe of the stamina of the riders, the complicated team work decisions that have to be made, and the skill riding those gravel roads today But mostly I watch the scenery. Perhaps this thread will give me more of an insight into what's going on!
Well, I've been watching extended highlights every evening to keep tabs on the race. I hate a foregone conclusion, so I hope the Yellow Jersey changes hands a couple more times before the final stage. Yes, Tadej Pogacar is an amazing cyclist, blah, blah, blah... just please have the race be interesting throughout. I'm an amateur cyclist, so I watch for the riding and team tactics almost as much as the scenery, but that scenery -- YES! -- viewing the villages, monuments, and countryside is glorious, and always makes me so, so jealous of anyone who can visit those places, even occasionally, easily. From the deeply southern USA it may as well be on another planet. So, right now I'm rooting for Remco Evenepoel, Jonas Vingegaard, Primoz Roglic and their teams to fight on, and hopefully we won't just watch Pogacar ride away with things in the mountains. Biniam Girmay's arrival has been wonderful to watch, and I keep being impressed by Jonas Abrahamsen's quest for the polka dot jersey. Tbh, I could have done without Mark Cavendish's breaking of Eddie Merckx's record, but I'm an odd one out on that score. Vive le Tour 2024!
Hm... - The interest in bipedal bicycling in the lovely land of the French seems to have somewhat waned... - is it because all the wrong people are winning?
