Warmer here today, finally. I had coffee with one friend, lunch with another two, and a couple of Zooms this afternoon and evening. A Very Busy couple of days ahead with various appointments and Things To Do.
  • A warm and pleasant day in Arkland the Benign. Some Paint Ing is planned for this afternoon, as the bit to be done is on the sunny side of the Ark.

Meanwhile, Shopp Ing has been shopped, but O! woe! Tess Coe was utterly devoid of Pilchards! AIUI, the pilchard harvest can be somewhat erratic at the best of times, but I blame Brexit (and Trump, of course).

As compensation, I bought a 4-pack of little cans (330ml) of Swedish CIDER, purely in a spirit of enquiry. I want to know what CIDER mixed with Strawberries and Pineapple tastes like...
    :yum:
  • Sainsbury's had no pilchards a couple of weeks ago, when I last put in an order, and today is only listing the 400g tins.
  • Hmm. I only buy the small tins (three Pilchards per tin), as that's all I need at any one time. I'll keep looking, but meanwhile will enjoy devouring Sardines instead...
  • I finally had my thrice postponed Ophthalmology consultation today. It took a long time to get there (two buses each way) as one is advised not to drive. Good news is that my glaucoma is stable and I won't need an operation, however I will have (much less invasive) laser treatment in about two months.

I like sardines but not pilchards - isn't that silly? And the large Portuguese sardines, grilled on a barbecue and drizzled with a little olive oil, can be bony sublime.

Busy day of lip reading followed by charity bookshop shift. Despite the nice weather not many people were out and about today, or if they were they weren't coming in our shop.
Our son is home for a long weekend, but he and my husband had gone out on a photographic exhibition when I got back. I'll catch up with him this evening instead.

Very Warm today. I got hot in my aerobics class, hot on the walk to coffee, hot sitting outside drinking that coffee and hot on the walk home. Having showered and changed into more summery things I then walked to the dentist for a check up and got hot. It seems appropriate weather for the Spring Equinox, however.

I've had a run of appointments lately, having been putting off the dentist, the optician and a hair cut. My hair dresser (who I've been seeing for decades) has left the establishment and it was with some trepidation that I made an appointment with Someone Else. She did a good job so I feel reassured. I usually keep the fringe sorted myself, and only go to have the ends trimmed once in a while, but with Nenlet2's wedding coming up in the summer I need to know I've got a hair dresser I can trust. Optician tomorrow.

Mr Nen is away on a 24 hour retreat - something he's only done once before. He was muttering darkly about what bad timing it is, as he has (as always) So Much To Do and was not sure he could go completely Off Grid as he was planning. I encouraged him to keep to his plan and hope that he does. So far the world seems to be continuing to turn without him being online constantly.

My favourite supper awaits me - jacket potato, baked beans and grated cheese.

It's supposed to get warmer here, but at -4° when I woke up, I'm not holding my breath. Mind you, Accu Weather says it's going to be 15° tomorrow, so you never know.

It's been a busy day; I was kept occupied at work, then had an appointment to get my nails done (glossy black) and then had a Vestry meeting.

With all that, the only thing I had time to make for supper was BEANS ON TOAST, but none the worse for that.
  • NenyaNenya All Saints Host, Ecclesiantics & MW Host
My favourite supper was consumed with relish.

Still mild here but rain is forecast. This is inconvenient as I am out and about on foot for most of the day.
  • Ah, but what sort of relish?
  • You beat me to it!

This has been a very cultural week. Last Thursday a contemporary dance performance. Sunday afternoon a classical content (including Sarah Connolly fabulously singing Mahler), Wednesday night "Merchant of Venice 1936", then more dance (different group) last night. Why do these things always come in clumps?

Our son is home for the weekend. Tonight we're off to our favourite vegan restaurant which annoyingly is closing down soon. Before that son and I are off to a walk to the nearest farm shop to get some bits and pieces.

I have new glasses. My prescription hasn't changed much but, nevertheless, the world is looking sharper and more vivid. Alas, the first thing I saw in detail when trying them on in the optician was my face in the mirror. Where did all those wrinkles come from?

The NE Man and I had a fun outing yesterday looking for the ruins of a medieval chapel. When we got there it was on the other side of a deer fence, and so we weren't able to explore. We followed that up with coffee in one of my favourite coffee shops.

I have a half-formed thought. At our last Elder's Away Day we were asked to think about alternative forms of "doing church" and I thought - Celtic Christianity. I'm not venturing into the theology, but I'm looking at facts - places such as yesterday's chapel named after a Celtic saint. I thought that if I wrote up all the definite historical references to Celtic worship either in our parish, or within, say 20 miles of our parish, then somebody more spiritual might be able to do something with it.

Yesterday's weather was a bit odd in that it was bright and sunny, the forecast promised double figures - but nevertheless there was ice on the water butt, and by the time I'd done a couple of hours in the garden, I was distinctly numb around the feet.

Today is dull and supposedly milder. I will go out later, as some plants have arrived. But just now I'm staying in in case the pharmacy delivers the balance of my prescription. Mr F, poor lad, is off having 4 fillings - so that'll be soup for lunch and omelette for dinner.

I have a history study day, though I will probably leave early to do some marking. I’m currently listening to a lecture on rural walks and colonialism by a lecturer who works with the National Trust. For example, the lecturer’s walk in Scotland included a Jamaican companion called Campbell who pointed out there were more Campbells in Jamaica than in Scotland, due to sugar plantation ownership. She’s just talked about tobacco trading from Cumbria, and has moved on to Wordsworth, opium and the East India Company.
Tolpuddle is on her list so I might hear mention of my great x3 grandfather, leader of the Tolpuddle martyrs.

I have been having an enjoyable week with the parents. Yesterday we went to Notre Dame. First time I've been back since the fire.

The reconstruction is amazing. I particularly loved the colours they've repainted with. I don't think they've been that bright in centuries.

It’s nice to have a famous peasant in the family, there aren’t many around.
I am currently listening to a hour long lecture about Katherine, the wife of Protestant theologian Peter Martyr Vermigli, whose body was dug up during the reign of Mary 1 and left in a dung hill for 5 years. I’m enjoying learning about a little known woman in male dominated narrative.

Busy and varied week. Yesterday was the main monthly u3a talk about the River Trent. Full of interesting information on various aspects especially social history/ transport, but delivered at breakneck speed- too much to take in.
Today in u3a French we reminisced about life during Covid lockdown and discussed its ongoing effects five years on. I have four distant relatives aged from 6 to 82, still affected long term in varying ways, including respiratory problems, fatigue, severe vertigo leading to change of employment, poor socialisation skills for the child. Apparently there is research from the Netherlands showing that lockdown accelerated cognitive decline, with an increase in Alzheimer’s disease.
It’s Celtic Communion at church tonight, then a big concert performance in the city tomorrow.
  • I can understand the appeal of both of those, annie!

Meanwhile I have a 2nd interview at a time yet to be confirmed next week. I need this badly, and it looks really me, so prayers, incantations, etc would be appreciated.

It's probably a good job I'm from Essex, so wouldn't know where to even start looking for a virgin...
  • NenyaNenya All Saints Host, Ecclesiantics & MW Host
I hope and pray there's a good outcome from that second interview @Sandemaniac .

I've had a nice day out and about, with some time in a coffee shop with my current real life book club book, which I've finally made good progress with. The rain also conveniently held off until now, when I am safely home.

Salmon and roast vegetables in parsley sauce for tea. It should be washed down with a glass or three of white but it won't be, because Lent.
  • I hope it does well, Sandemaniac.
I dropped out of the conference early to get some marking done. Tea was chicken in creamy mushroom and spinach sauce, with gnocchi. Accompanied by a glass of Sauvignon blanc.

    Best of luck, Sanders! 🤞

Having dozed off earlier, I'm now wide awake at stupid o'clock and should go and get some proper sleep - I'm off to Helensburgh in the morning to do some singing.

    F&C for supper, because Friday.
  • SarasaSarasa All Saints Host
Good luck @Sandemaniac with the second interview.
We headed to the city to the west for dinner in our favourite vegan restaurant. It didn't disappoint, and the wine pairings were excellent too. The trains worked well in both directions, and as we live five minutes from the station and the restaurant is about ten minutes walk from the station at the other end it is so much less stressful than trying to drive there. The place was packed and they were turning people away. It is sad it is closing, but I guess the owner has different plans for what he wants to do next.
We are shortly heading out to go and look at a new art gallery here, and then pick up stuff for dinner tonight as we have friends coming over to play games.
  • Mr Heavenly left this morning for Heathrow, in the hopeful expectation of a flight to the US for a an important business meeting.
I’ve been for a long walk and I am just having a cup of tea and an almond croissant before heading into the garden for a bit of planting up. Then it is an afternoon in the study as I have a 3000 word essay to write about political communication and control in the early modern period. The introduction is done and today I plan to write 1000 words on the Tudors - hence the long walk as I plan my essays while walking.

I haven't been out of the house yet today and think I should probably take a Brief Brisk Walk before tea. Tea is stir fry because Saturday.

We are off to Germany tomorrow so Much Cleaning has been done ready for the Housesitter.

    It is now wine o'clock.

    Cheers 🍷
  • Have fun in Germany.

I have just finished the first half of the essay. Moving on to the Georgians tomorrow.
Not sure what is for tea, I bought some fancy Gorgonzola gnocchi last week but we had plain gnocchi with chicken last night. So I’m guessing it is either the feta and spinach filo parcel or a courgette, salami and cheese frittata. Likewise I am not sure what I am drinking, I have some new blackcurrant liqueur so I might make a kir royale.
I am home alone for a few days so I am probably going to watch some telly for a change.

We explored Magor this morning after checking the entrance to the church at Llanfabon as Darllenwr will be preaching there tomorrow.
Lunch was at a. very nice pub in Magor with the couple who’ve led the retreats we’ve been on in the past. We met at 12.45, didn’t leave until 4.50!

I'm just back from a lovely day of singing in Helensburgh. We were made very welcome, and when I was chatting afterwards to a couple of ladies from the church, it turned out they were friends of a gentleman from St Pete's, to whom I must pass on their best wishes.

The singing went excellently, and Frikki (our conductor) was very pleased; in fact he said he thought it was the best we've done yet. :)

Afterwards there was eating and drinking in the Helensburgh Wetherspoons (sorry about that; I really don't approve, but the chap who usually does the organising seems to like them - they are very cheap). This one was several cuts above your average though; they had lights over the bar with Glasgow roses and wee square dots (a la Rennie Mackintosh), which I would very happily have over my dining table ...

Because I'm an idiot (as you know), I goofed with the train on the way home; my friend left me to Croy station, and when I got there I saw a train on the opposite platform, legged it up the stairs and over the bridge, boarded said train ... and discovered it was going to Alloa, which is quite the wrong direction. A lot of bad words were said to myself, but I managed to get off at Larbert and hence back home. What a plonker ...

I had a brief visit from my granddaughter this morning. Then very early lunch and caught the 12.30 bus into the city. I was lucky not to have to wait. Three buses arrived in quick succession and people getting on said they had been waiting 20 minutes. They are normally at ten minute intervals during the day.
Rehearsal with the orchestra was a shock, as they were far too loud as usual, and of course totally different from our usual piano accompaniment. We struggled to hear other voices so missed some of our usual cues from other parts, but probably nobody in the audience noticed as it is a work rarely performed. So I am not quite feeling the usual high after a performance, but it was after all quite an achievement.( Herbert Howells’ Hymnus Paradisi). A friend came to listen and gave me a lift home for which I was most grateful as I would have just missed a bus and had to wait 30 minutes, never a pleasant experience in the city on a Saturday night.
I may or may not make it to church in the morning.
  • I have been for a short walk (in light rain) and pottered in the garden (in light rain). I am now going to tackle the second half of my essay in the study where it is, at least, dry.
  • PigletPiglet All Saints Host, Circus Host
@Puzzler - I don't know Hymnus Paradisi, but a decent performance of anything by Howells is an achievement (we did a pretty decent Like as the hart yesterday)! As I've probably said elsewhere, I have to get myself in the right frame of mind to sing Howells, but when I do, it's absolutely magic. :)

Rather odd hymns at St Pete's this morning (see Eccles), not helped by not having had choir practice yesterday - not just that I wasn't there - they didn't have one. Rather a case of the blind leading the even blinder ...
Laundry is laundering, and I'll shortly have some brunch, followed by making some SOUP for supper and then some snoozage before Compline.

Son has just headed off to the station for his train home to London. it was lovely to have him here for a few days. Last night's games evening with friends was excellent, even if I didn't have a clue as to what strategy to use in the first game and subsequently came last.

Church this morning, coffee and debrief with Mr Nen (who has been Even More Busy Than Usual over the past few weeks and in such times it comes to a "Can we diarise a coffee" situation) afterwards, now home and looking forward to roast chicken with a glass or so of wine and some chocolate with the after-dinner coffee, because Sunday.

    Dull but fairly mild here.

Mild and grey in Arkland the Calm, although light Rain is forecast for this evening.

A brief Expotition to Tess Coe has been accomplished - I don't often go on a Sunday, but traffic, both on the roads and in the store, was light. I regret to report, however, that the shortage of Pilchards continues.
    :disappointed:

I had a busy day yesterday, dealing with a smoke leak (!) from the Dragon. I thought it might be due to a soot fall, so opened up the soot box, and hoovered out a small amount - but then spotted a Hole :scream: about an inch long in the rear wall of the box.

This was soon sealed up with fire-resistant rope, and some fire cement, and the problem has been solved, at least for the time being. Some more attention will be paid in a couple of months' time, when the Dragon is having his time of estivation, and I can give him a thorough clean-up and inspection.
  • PigletPiglet All Saints Host, Circus Host
I hope it's not too long before you can properly sort him out, BF - the idea of Noxious Fumes escaping into the Ark is not a happy thought! 😳

SOUP has been made (bacon, lentil and tomato), which though I say it what shouldn't, tastes rather nice.
  • The essay is written, just the editing and referencing to do which I have pencilled in for Tuesday afternoon. The referencing will take several hours (sob).
Still undecided on tea, probably the spinach and feta pie, with a glass of Prosecco.
  • PuzzlerPuzzler Shipmate
I’ve felt very tired after yesterday’s concert, so I didn’t make it to my usual church for the 9.15 service. Instead I went to one of the other churches in our group. Attendance was 12, which surprised everyone.( Normally 4-6).

I’ve done nothing much today. A day of rest. Tomorrow I have to wait in for two boxes of books to be collected, but I have plenty to keep me busy, not least looking at music for the May concert in readiness for Monday evening’s rehearsal.

I am bored, possibly due to not having been to church this evening, my chauffeur being currently in the US. I have done the laundry, cleaned the fridge and watched the second part of a iPlayer documentary on Berlin 1933. Based on the letters and diaries of people in Berlin, it reminds me of Julia Boyd’s fascinating book ‘Travellers in the third reich’ which tells the story of nazism through the letters and diaries of visitors to Germany. I also recommend David Olusoga’s recent series of ‘A house through time’ which compares the experiences of occupants of two apartments, in Berlin and Marylebone, in WW2.
Being bored, I have ordered a new bistro set for the patio, our ancient wooden bench set having rotted away to a state where it is no longer safe to sit on. I look forward with hope to a summer of morning coffee in the sun.
  • Meanwhile I have a 2nd interview at a time yet to be confirmed next week. I need this badly, and it looks really me, so prayers, incantations, etc would be appreciated.
Confirmed for 3pm on Thursday. It's described as a site visit, with two of the three people I'm meeting being the ones who interviewed me over Teams, but I'm going to work on the assumption its a further interview and read up as much as I can on the systems I now know I'll be using so I can ask sensible questions.

That sounds very promising @Sandemaniac, fingers crossed for Thursday.
I went to the Leisure Centre for my Pilates class then decided I didn't want to do it with the stand in tutor. She was OK last time she took our class, but hasn't been great other times. Instead I came home and have just spent and hour working on the border by the greenhouse. Fingers crossed the penstemon I moved so that both it and a rose could have more room isn't too cross with me.

I'll be thinking of and praying for you on Thursday @Sandemaniac .

Mr Nen and I tried Pilates some years ago (a series of 6) and I didn't like it at all. He said he did, but when I stopped going he did too. He's trialling another class this afternoon so it'll be interesting to see how he gets on. I suspect, like a lot of things, It All Depends On The Teacher.

After a grey start the sun's coming out here and I'm busy with domestics in between fiddling about online. We have visitors later this week and I've taken to the charity shop everything in the spare room that was mine to take. Let the reader understand.
  • My Pilates sessions are one-to-one, just the Torturer and Myself. I don't think I could cope with a group class...as it is, I have to concentrate very hard on what Herself is saying, and asking me to do, and other people would be a most awful distraction.
