We’re on the train about to head off home from city to the south. We’ve just been spending lots of money on updating our phones. We had lunch at an excellent India vegetarian restaurant and we’re now both thoroughly stuffed.
  • Mince PIES before Advent Sunday? Is Outrage!! Mind you, I nearly succumbed to temptation whilst in the Co-Op earlier, as their shortcrust MPs are rather nice, even though I prefer Flaky Pastry.

As to MARMITE, it is the egregious Vegemite which is made up of the Skidmarks from Satan's Knickers...
@Firenze - best wishes for good treatment, and strength to cope with it IYSWIM!

Tomorrow is the 10th anniversary of the MRI scan which revealed a large brain tumour, so I have bittersweet memories...
  • I had my first mince pie of the season last night and am about to have my second. I’ve done most of my Christmas shopping already; I like to do it early so I can enjoy the days before Christmas without stress.

Gardening was accomplished, with the ground lovely and soft. Birds fed and laundry done. We appear to have new neighbours in the rental next door so we went and had a chat with them (the previous tenants, a family, disappeared 2 weeks ago and we thought they had just gone on holiday). I am currently trying to coerce my husband, 2 sons and a girlfriend into giving me their food orders via WhatsApp for my family Christmas get together. It’s like herding cats.

Lunch was a very nice chicken and ham pie. Not sure about tea as that is Mr Heavenly’s task.

Mince PIES before Advent Sunday? Is Outrage!! ...
It was the local Advent Fair, and St Pete's were providing/selling mince pies and mulled wine. It would have been rude not to, and also, quality control.

The baked Camembert thingie was a bit of a curate's egg; the rind was difficult to cut with a spreading knife, and I'm not at all sure that I wouldn't rather just have it as God intended, with a few grapes and the bread.

When David and I had a stop-over in Ottawa one perishingly cold February, we had supper in a lovely little restaurant where we shared a baked Brie with some kind of sauce (I think it was based on tomatoes) and it was lovely. I had rather hoped that this would be similar, but it sort of wasn't.

  • Ah - Quality Control! Yes, most important...

  • MTheir shortcrust MPs are rather nice, even though I prefer Flaky Pastry.
Flaky MPs, eh? Now which party/parties might they belong to?

@Firenze - I'm racking my brains a bit here: am I right in thinking that in Northern Ireland the fruity filling of a mince pie is called "sweet mince", or was that in Canada? 🤔
  • MTheir shortcrust MPs are rather nice, even though I prefer Flaky Pastry.
Flaky MPs, eh? Now which party/parties might they belong to?

Your Party, it would appear, at least from today's Noos...
  • SarasaSarasa All Saints Host
Your Party do appear to be in a spot of bother don't they @Baptist Trainfan
I'm rather partial to Waitrose's cranberry and orange mince pies with a crumble topping. I once had a parish priest who thought eating mince pies of any variety before Christmas Day was very much to be frowned upon.

Your Party" isn't my party, though ...

I play a game with myself which is seeing how far into December I can go without eating a mince pie. (Mind you I had one in August when we held a "Christmas in Summer" Holiday Club!).

Mince pies? Any time in Advent for me (though I had my first yesterday). Much less critical time-wise than Hot Cross Buns before Good Friday - now that really is an outrage.
  • We had the Waitrose cranberry and orange mince pies today, they were very nice.
  • Your Party" isn't my party, though ...

    <snip>

    Understood.

It's a rather silly name, though, no?

  • Well, it's only a provisional name until they agree on a proper one ... which looks unlikely to happen before the party fatally implodes!
  • la vie en rougela vie en rouge Purgatory Host, Circus Host
I have been knitting like the clappers and turned out 4 woolly hats and 5 headbands to be sold for worthy causes at the church Christmas market.

This afternoon Captain Pyjamas went to his best friend's birthday. The party bag included cheap imitation lego from China, but it ain't as good as the real stuff. You need a microscope to see the instructions, and the pieces don't fit together so well. The Captain, who was not responsible for assembling it, obviously thought it was awesome.

Captain P's friend lives near Invalides, and today I spotted a couple of rabbits.

I believe that in advanced (or possibly degenerate) civilizations, Mince Pies, like Shortbread are consumed year round. The first Sunday in Advent is simply the signal for doubling the normal rate of production and consumption.

Mince pies are the work of Satan.

After a very disrupted night’s sleep I felt decidedly off colour; I survived my final exercise class but only by opting out of the toughest ones.

My cousin and his wife duly turned up this afternoon but an hour late, with no updates on their journey until about 15 minutes before they arrived. They informed me they would take a taxi back rather than a 35 min bus ride to their hotel. I was pleased to see them but grateful that I was not expected to drive them back at dusk.
All plans are in place for a big family lunch tomorrow. I’ll have time to go to church first.
  • PigletPiglet All Saints Host, Circus Host
Hope all goes according to plan and you have a lovely birthday, Puzzler!

At the risk of causing more Outrage, I have sung my first carols of the season. In my defence, it was at the lighting of the Linlithgow Christmas tree, which is the culmination of the Advent Fair. Sadly, the people who organise these things don't know the difference between Advent and Christmas, so we had O come, all he faithful, Away in a manger, Hark, the herald angels sing* and We wish you a merry Christmas, but it was all very jolly.

I've also put up the candle-bridges, and am delighted to report that so far all the bulbs are functioning as they should. :)

    * No - it doesn't mean I've lost "Harkageddon", as it doesn't start until 1st December.

Master Heavenly the younger told me he lost Whamageddon 2 weeks ago so he will be pleased to know the clock restarts in December.

I hope the weekend goes well, Puzzler.

Just managed to get the menu choices from my immediate family for the Christmas family meet up. It took over 7 hours over WhatsApp, and one of the four people being nagged was in the room with me for most of that time.
  • SarasaSarasa All Saints Host
Hope you have a lovely time tomorrow @Puzzler.
I have a full day of civic duties tomorrow, starting with a visit to the Salvation Army tomorrow morning which will be a bit of a change for Catholic me and Quaker husband. They have an annual motorbike toy run and I'm there to greet the riders on behalf of the Town Council. Then in the afternoon its the official Christmas lights switch on and the first of several Christmas markets. I don't have anything much to do at that other than eat a mince pie or two and look decorative.

i avoid causing wife to lose Whamageddon by playing'the 'pudding mix' version. only the orginal radio mix counts ... apparently ... i do not join in with such nonsesne ... i love christmas music.

In our house i am banned from playing christmas playlists untl December !st ... not long now

I heard a snatch of Last Christmas yesterday afternoon, but as pointed out, before 1st December it doesn't count.

I feel that church musicians should be exempt from "Harkageddon" as the chances of them making it to Christmas Eve without singing it are virtually nil!
It's a beautiful, if not very warm, day in West Lothian; brunch has been had, laundry is waiting to be transferred to the tumble-dryer, and once that's done I'll start doing things to the lamb shank; I've found a recipe for a Moroccan style sauce with tomatoes, chickpeas and spices, so I'm going to give that a go.
  • Cold and Sun-Shiny in Arkland, too, with light Rain forecast for tomorrow morning. That's OK, as it'll (hopefully) clear up before I head for Tess Coe around midday!

Neighbour F has unloaded his Trusty Trailer, and the Ark is now almost walled in on the landward side by a great pile of Coal Bags...

Time to start making my list of Christmas cards, and maybe even writing and posting them.

I've just had a lovely morning with the Salvation Army ahead of greeting the Biker's Santa run. Nearly 300 bikers and an awful lot of presents of children that wouldn't otherwise have them. My husband also enjoyed himself, I didn't know he knew that much about motorbikes. Shortly I'm off to eat mince pies and drink mulled wine ahead of our town's official light switch on.
  • Good to see you here, svf.

My planning for my annual family do has made Mr Heavenly realise that in 2 weeks time we will have 3 guests in the house and the big spare room is filled with junk (we haven’t cleared and decorated that room yet). He had taken a couple of days off last week with the aim of starting to clear the room but ended up mostly doing work admin/building a version of his childhood computer. So since last night we have both been doing a Big Tidy. As we can’t tidy together and stay sane, I have left him to deal with the spare room and I have been tidying the front room, mostly of his electrical stuff.

    Off to church shortly.
  • PuzzlerPuzzler Shipmate
My pre-birthday meal was very enjoyable. I was chauffered by youngest grandson, 18 whose driving was exemplary. His sister collected my cousins from the station but unfortunately my niece was stranded on Leeds station for hours before eventually trains restarted after some electrical problems. Too late for her to make it, sadly, but I‘m hoping she managed to get back home safely.
I now have a house full of flowers and balloons. Tomorrow morning my son is coming over, then it’s lunch out with my church choir friends. Choral society rehearsal for Messiah in the evening.
  • Concerts have been concerted.
Le Sacre had a talk (unadvertised) beforehand with extracts of contemporary music. Mrs Twang didn't seem to mind. I had a bit of a tussle with a municipal Christmas tree on the way back from the bar during the interval but other than that it passed without incident.
Played keys at church today, roast chicken dinner at lunchtime (I'm learning the ways of our new oven so hopefully will be on top of it by jesus' birthday dinner).
    Decorations are in process.
Wine (merlot) was had at lunch, beer later with the iron-ing.
  • NenyaNenya All Saints Host, Ecclesiantics & MW Host
Glad you had an enjoyable meal @Puzzler and that the concerts went well @Twangist .

We went to morning service at Our Place and visited a local coffee shop with friends afterwards. This evening Mr Nen went back to Our Place for one of the occasional evening meetings and I went to our local parish church for their Advent Service of Light which was very lovely. There was mulled wine and home made mince pies afterwards as well and they were also very lovely. Apparently the maker of the mince pies puts an egg yolk into her pastry - Is Outrage! I've never heard of such a thing... but they were Pretty Tasty.

Feeling tired and a bit overwhelmed this evening, so the next thing on the To Do list is to crawl into bed with my book.
  • la vie en rougela vie en rouge Purgatory Host, Circus Host
My Mum always puts an egg yolk in her mince pie pastry. Despite the fact that she generally doesn't enjoy cooking very much, her mince pies are excellent.
  • The majority of mince pie recipes I have looked at online use an enriched shortcrust pastry, with an egg (either whole or just the yolk) and sugar.

Personally I wouldn't want the pastry sweetened as I find mincemeat too sweet. I try to add something a bit sharp to the mix if I can. Nor would I bother with the egg, as my mother's everyday shortcrust was perfect to my taste, for sweet or savoury dishes!
I am still trying to replicate it, but I don't seem to have her knack.

Another wet and windy morning in Arkland the Tempest-Tossed, but the Rain eased off just as I tottered to the car to go to Tess Coe (because Monday). The Nice Lady who collects the trolleys in the car park agreed with me that we both prefer the cold, dry, Sun-Shiny weather that we used to get in December...

All is safely gathered in, especially BAKED BEANS and IRISH STEW, not to mention CHEESE (Emmental and Iberico).

Lunch is Cornish Pasty n'CHIPS, with (of course) GRAVY.

Restage this afternoon, as I have Pilates tomorrow (because Tuesday).
  • A lighter day today, the usual Monday morning comms and admin, followed by a small amount of marking. Now having a break before I go and do another referencing tutorial.
I might cook dinner before teaching but I haven’t looked yet to see what there is.
  • PuzzlerPuzzler Shipmate
My son came this morning and set up the joint birthday present of a record deck and speakers, so I now have a lovely music room for quality listening.
Had a lovely lunch out with choir friends. Most had venison pie with mash and red cabbage, some of us had crispy turkey schnitzel with stir fried veg, including sprouts, mushrooms and bacon lardons, topped with an egg. Delicious. Sticky toffee pudding or dark chocolate tart with orange sorbet to follow. Had a great time and was given a theatre token.
(Different) choir practice tonight, getting ready for Messiah plus an early January concert, with carols in between.
Fortunately I have free days ( not evenings) for the rest of the week. I need to catch up with myself after a non-stop week.
My niece arrived home safely after all the train problems of yesterday. So sad she missed my family lunch.

Today I collected my new laptop. I had to get a new one as Windows 10 is no longer supported and my old (almost 12 years) fully working one was not compatible with Windows 11. Gradually figuring Windows 11 out so hopefully all will be well. My bank balance not so much 😆

Captain Pyjamas went back to school today. In anticipation of putting Christmas decorations up later in the week I did some heavy duty Clean Ing, and went to the cellar to the get the box. So far I've just put up the advent calendar and nativity set.

This afternoon I went and picked up my new glasses. Behold! I can actually see!
  • PigletPiglet All Saints Host, Circus Host
I've had a mostly lazy day off; I pootled down to Tessie's to stock up fridge and larder (Villa Maria Sauvignon Blanc on special offer - yipee!), stopping in Costa en route for a cheese-and ham toastie and a HUGE cup of cappuccino (I asked for "large" with no idea of how large it would be - it arrived in what looked like a soup bowl, with two handles).

It was a nice day for an amble though: dry and not even cold (10°).

Supper will be part II of the Moroccan lamb shank; it's definitely something I'll do again. It's possible it might even do yet another day - it was a generously-proportioned beast!
  • SarasaSarasa All Saints Host
A lazy day today with another one anticipated tomorrow. The rest of the week will be busier so I'm making the most of it. I did go to the corner shop aka Waitrose to pick up a John Lewis parcel and made some a spicy red lentil and tomato soup for lunch. There is enough for tomorrow to which is a bonus.
The weather has not been conducive to doing much as it has been wet all day. I'm glad the forecast for Wednesday when we have our Ramblers Christmas lunch with a 'brisk' walk before hand looks a lot better.
  • Really wet all day. This evening we held our annual Carol Aid event where the local primary school comes to church, we sing carols together, their choir performs and we raise money for a local charity. A few scares along the way (would the weather put people off, the computer deciding to do an update at a most inconvenient moment, the church heating failing) but it went really well in the end!
  • NenyaNenya All Saints Host, Ecclesiantics & MW Host
Wet all day here yesterday too but bright and sunny this morning. This is good as I am out and about shopping and seeing friends for lunch, coffees, chats, etc. Some domestics first - chasing laundry, mainly.

I experienced the "large" soup bowl of a milky drink at Costa once as well, @Piglet - I've been very careful not to make that mistake again!

    Lazy Curry for tea.

    Not very chewy ...

I have a School Governors' meeting this afternoon.

And the sun is out, for now at least.
  • Bright and Sun-Shiny in Arkland the Damp, at least until I got out of the car on my way from Pilates and Brunch, at which moment They turned the taps back on. It takes me a few minutes to get from Car to Ark, so I was rather wet by the time I reached the warmth of the galley...

    It is now Sun-Shiny again.
  • PuzzlerPuzzler Shipmate
    Decent sunny, dry day today.
This afternoon I planned to catch up with online admin but my laptop failed to connect to the internet, though phone and ipad are fine.
Committee meeting tonight, with the recalcitrant Chair (f).

It must have rained during the night here, as the walkway outside the flat was Quite Wet (sometimes the drains which serve it don't do what drains are supposed to do), but by the time I went out to Tessie's at lunch time to get some AAA batteries for the remote thingie for the heating it was quite nice.

Got my first application of festive nails done after work (black with silver sparkles), then the last of the lamb shank for supper and then over the road for the last Night Church of the year, which was rather nice.

Now going to veg out with the Grauniad crossword.
  • SarasaSarasa All Saints Host
I had a successful day of not doing much which was exactly what I wanted.
Tomorrow we're off to the Rambler's Christmas lunch, which will be proceeded by a walk to work up an appetite. Last year's meal, in a different pub, wasn't great so I'm hoping tomorrow's will be better. At least the company will be congenial.
  • I have a couple of days free from marking so this morning I recorded a tutorial on looking after your mental health while studying and this afternoon I added a final paragraph (on using historical outdated terminology when discussing mental health) to the introductory chapter of my master’s dissertation. I have also done most of the referencing of the chapter; I just need to chase up some online sources. On Thursday I will start planning the next chapter which is about seventeenth century medicine and mental health, which includes the four humours (black bile, yellow bile, blood and phlegm), bleeding, purging and astrology.
This evening I went to a tutorial about writing the dissertation and it was good to catch up with some fellow students.
Tea was mutton and mushroom stroganoff. I’m now having a glass of frizzante.

correct me if i am wrong, this appears to be a thread for burbling about nonsensical whimsical nothings.

for reasons we don’t need to explore i grew a beard. it’s not difficult. I have never in my whole life gone more than a week without shaving.

so i decided to do it and keep it for three months. dreadful thing to do. it ages me. my face still needs to be shaved, but now it is fiddly and awkward. and i have decided it gives me the air of a slightly bemused gnome.

one good thing has come out of it, i have booked an appointment with my barber to have one of those barber shaves with a cut throat razor, the full works.

never done that in my life either, so i figured this was the opportunity to try it.

So yes, it's about the minutiae of our daily lives, and perhaps they are just whimsy and nonsense.

Me, I'll be indoors mostly, waiting for the grocery delivery and the fish van, while trying to find out how to access my anti-cancer meds.

Last night’s choir committee meeting was very long, ended after 10pm but no time was wasted. Lots of important issues covered including safeguarding as we have an autistic junior member, now 17, introduced by our MD, and our arrangements ( not our policies) need updating in practice. Also lots of details re our next concert. So much is done by “ those in the know”, which is finally to be documented. So much outdated practice. Also our Treasurer is adamant that he is retiring next summer. No idea who is capable of replacing him. Definitely not me, as numbers make my mind go blank. Our younger members with suitable experience have busy working lives, whilst most of our older members probably don’t have the right skill set. Carol rehearsal tonight. I’d better have a listen to some of the new ones.

I went back to the restaurant where we ate on my birthday as they had overcharged me, by charging for individual dishes instead of the fixed price. No problem getting a refund.
Still catching up with myself today.
