Sixteen years ago, when our daughter was in third grade, she did the Girls on the Run program. Each “season” of Girls on the Run ends with a 5K, for which the participating girls each asks a 16-or-over “buddy” to run with them. Our daughter asked her 20-year-old cousin to run the 5K with her. (And our daughter went on to run competitively in high school and college, and she’s now done four marathons, including Boston and Chicago. She’s running the Sydney Marathon in August of ‘26.)
Now, that cousin has her own third-grade daughter who’s been doing Girls on the Run, and she asked our daughter (who’ll turn 25 this week) to run with her. It really was a fun, full-circle moment. And it was great to see 1,000+ young girls running, plus their buddies and assorted others who just wanted to run and support the program.
Such fun. Good to see it carry through the generations.
