We have old-fashioned awnings on top of the verandah windows, and they have an extra flap of material (white, open lattice design) which can be attached to hang down, thus giving windows more shade without losing too much light. In addition, all the doors in the house are propped open and the upper floor windows on the shady side are open to their fullest extent.
