Happy All Souls’ Day!

A slightly early All Souls’ Day (November 2) to all! Is anyone doing anything special?

I’ve watched the Dia de los Muertos episode of El Tigre, and have started The Book of Life movie, and hope to put together my Lego ofrenda, and plan to make the matzoh ball soup Daddy Vern and Cubby both loved. But off to bed for me now (11 pm Nov. 1 here, so I thought I’d post this now…).

I don’t know what this means here. 🤔
  • I'm not going to make it to church today, because of a bout of post-exertion malaise thanks to the Long COVID which taps me on the shoulder whenever I'm tempted to think I'm through it.

There are many people I would be praying for and offering up - I still am, albeit at a distance. All feels weird and horrible.
  • We sang 'For all the saints', all 8 verses. We had a visiting Nigerian minister who is pretty conservative (for a Methodist) about liturgy and hymn choices, and it went really well - we are lucky to have a young Sri Lankan organist with us at the mo, and he can *really* play. We even get a banging voluntary at the end. He even likes our organ, which is amazing; the guy who spec'd it died quite a while ago but he would be truly delighted about how things are at the moment.

...and a couple of relevant tunes which have been on my mind by Greenbelt old favourites Lies Damned Lies:

    Great Cloud of Witnesses
    and
    Beloved

    Hope you (pl) like them.

4:38 pm. OK, the soup is set up and I actually made it from scratch this time. It’s not yet at a boil, of course not at least of which because a bunch of things in there are frozen. In there are chicken thighs, garlic cloves, frozen onion and celery, carrot slices, cut up parsnips which I’ve been wanting to use, some white wine, water of course, thyme, dill, black pepper, 2 dried chilis de arbol, unflavored gelatin, a dash of cloves, ginger, and some frozen soup vegetables. This will simmer for as long as it needs to. Matzoh ball mix (matzoh meal, eggs, oil, a little water, parsley) is mixed and chilling in the fridge. Also got two kinds of ice cream Cubby would love (butter pecan and chocolate/peanut butter) and a slice of red velvet cake, a favorite of his. And now to lie down for about half an hour. Broth should be at a boil by then. Then grading stuff…

Sending hugs and prayers your way!
  • We went to a community choir concert last night, which was held in a nearby Episcopal church. This particular church, modern in style (altar in the center with seating on all four sides), has two side chapels, one of which contains an image of Our Lady of Guadalupe. An elaborate and very colorful ofrende for Día de los Muertos had been erected in that chapel.

It surprised me a little bit, as I’m not at all used to seeing anything like that in Episcopal churches in these parts, but then I realized that a Spanish-language Episcopal congregation meets in that church, and the host parish and Spanish-language community held a joint All Saints service and luncheon on Sunday.
