Just heard California Avocados won't be picked for another month. Considering the amount of tree damage in Florida, we don't expect much of a harvest from them. WE'RE DOOMED!!! Personally, I am avoiding Israeli products. Now if the Avocados come from Palestine--ya I can eat them.

Avocados are proof that God loves us. Making you run out of them is, IMHO, more than enough grounds for impeachment. :naughty:

Can Trump not magic up Avocados from the magic avocado tree? Our PM found a lot of money for Northern Ireland in a magic tree. Surely the leader of the biggest economy in the world can do that with avocados.
Seriously if we wern’t In such trouble I would be saying something funny about him but we may be making a big deal with him soon. So for now he i s the best president ever. That hair is so natural. Isn’t he so witty? 🙄

Avocados are the only food I'm allergic to, so there are more for the rest of you.

Thee best dates on the entire planet come from the West Bank. Some however are grown by Israeli settlers land thieves.

It's the slimy texture that grosses me out. I have never understood the popularity of them. (I've never tasted green snot, so I can't compare them!)

My local source for avocados has disappeared. (BFF's ancient avocado tree mostly taken down by Hurricane Irma.) Sadness and despair.

    So last Tuesday Donald Trump:
    1. Tried three times to say the word "origins" but instead said "oranges". Eventually he gave up and went with "beginnings".
    2. Said that his father had been born in Germany, not New York City.
    3. Said, live on C-SPAN, that he was choosing his words carefully, because otherwise someone would leak the speech to the media.
    4. Claimed that wind farms caused cancer because they were noisy.
    5. Urged Republicans to be "more paranoid" because he "doesn’t like the way the votes are being tallied."

Items 1-2 happened in a televised appearance at the White House. Items 3-5 during an appearance before the National Republican Congressional Committee. At what point does speculation about his mental fitness become something other than paranoid conspiracy theorizing?
  • Gramps49Gramps49 Shipmate
Grandfather came from Germany, but he wanted to return to Germany. He was refused because he did not serve in the German military. Seems to run in the family--not serving in the military.
Urged Republicans to be "more paranoid" because he "doesn’t like the way the votes are being tallied."

I note that nearly all the voter fraud cases I am aware of are Republican. They do seem to have a lock on that activity.

I suppose "orange" is his default setting ...

Considering his paranoia about his predecessor's origins*, you'd think he'd be shouting his father's Americanness from the rooftops.

As to the wind farms, he'll say anything to discredit power that doesn't come from hydrocarbons.

    * or even oranges

    (a) When the cows come home.
    (b) When hell freezes over.
    (c) When pigs fly.
    (d) When Congress comes to its senses . . . i.e., when the Democrats regain control of the Senate.
    (e) None of the above.
  • I reckon that sort of speculation became legitimate in or about 1987.

He was attempting to claim an affinity with Angela Merkel. Which is quite surprising in itself.

Or claim connection with a certain regime...to which both his dad and grandad were supposedly somewhat sympathetic...

GOOD NEWS. My AVOCADOS ARE SAVED!!!! After intense pressure from the Republicans and business interests tRump has walked back his threat to close the border. He says he will give Mexico one year to comply with HIS demands or he will start taxing cars produced in Mexico or close the border.

What this means is the bully has blinked.

Gives me time to stock up on guacamole. I wonder if you can freeze it.
  • Avocados seem to be mostly Mexican here. They range from $1.50 to $3 each. Alligator pears by any other name.

Not sure I'm understanding how the anti-Israel comments relate to the topic. I think there's quite enough to be anti about with Fat Nixon.
  • Gramps49Gramps49 Shipmate
Someone previously said Israel produces Avocados. I said I do not buy products produced in Israel. Someone else pointed out that the avocados Israel produces likely comes from land Israel had seized from Palestinian land owners. That is why I will not by Israeli avocados. My son spent a year in Palestine and he had us commit to not buying known Israeli products.

But that can be a topic of another thread.

I was using the avocado complaint just to show how stupid and how dangerous Trumps ideas can be a la Stephen Colbert.

  • They're nowhere near local here that's for sure. Them and mangoes. It's all apples kept in the dark and frozen berries while we watch the snow think about melting.

Agree that the Israel angle has to be another thread. I don't agree with the side taking at all re.

As you will have seen on the Brexit threads May has caused s lot of trouble with strong words which she has had now to roll back on. That sounds like Donny Quixote to me.

Trump for a long time (maybe even now?) has been (incorrectly) telling people that his father's ancestry was Swedish, not German, because of lingering wariness about Germans, especially in NYC with its large Jewish population, and especially back in the 1970s (when Trump was becoming a household name in the area) when there were quite a few people around who had been alive during the Holocaust, if they were not Holocaust survivors themselves (or relatives of Holocaust survivors).
  • Golden KeyGolden Key Shipmate, Glory
Supposedly, he was *told* that they were Swedish, and didn't know otherwise until some time in adulthood. IIRC, his grandpa started that, because Germans weren't well thought of at the time. (After WW I, maybe?) Original family name was Drumpfen, I think.

Have you heard the latest rant Don the Quiote is harping about. Yep. Windmills. He claims if you live near them your property value goes down. They also cause cancer. And if the wind isn't blowing for three days people will have blackouts. So many problems with these assertions.

My son said he believes Trump so much that this weekend he tore down his windmill, but it was such hard work that he had to take three smoke breaks.

    CNN's report on the rant.,

I doubt that it is coincidence that he launched into this just after a court ruling that his golf course in Scotland has to pay the legal bills of the Scottish government for its efforts to defend its wind farm off the coast of Scotland that Trump claimed spoiled his view.

Or, to be blunter, Trump is abusing the office of the Presidency to take revenge for a personal business set-back. If a Democrat did that, the Republicans would be screaming about conflicts of interest. But because a Republican is doing it, they are all as quiet as church mice. Party loyalty beats ethics every time.

This seems like the kind of thing that's usually cause for concern in countries that aren't the United States:
In an email to employees at his agency obtained by CNN's Jim Acosta, [ Secret Security director Randolph "Tex" ] Alles told the workforce he was not fired, but was told weeks ago that the administration would be making "transitions in leadership" at the Department of Homeland Security.

    <snip>

The Secret Service director reports directly to the Secretary of Homeland Security, Kirstjen Nielsen, who resigned on Sunday amid growing pressure from the President. The director oversees the Secret Service's work on both protection and investigations.

"There is a near-systematic purge happening at the nation's second-largest national security agency," one senior administration official says.

United States Citizenship and Immigration Services director Francis Cissna and Office of the General Counsel's John Mitnick are expected to be gone soon, and the White House is eyeing others to be removed.

Sudden and unexpected purging "transitions in leadership" of the security forces is rarely an omen of good things.

Note, whenever someone resigns or is fired, Trump names an acting (position). He is not naming a permanent name so the nominee will not face confirmation by the Senate. Moreover acting chiefs cannot set up their own staff thus they have to rely more on Trump.

Lately, tRump is saying America is full. He even said that at the Young Republican Jewish Convocation. Problem is before WWII when thousands of German Jews tried to escape to the US on the St. Louis, they were turned away. The excuse was "America is too full."

Seems like the Young Jews do not know their own history.

None of them can afford to have the press looking too closely at conflicts of interest. Fortunately for them the press is happy to turn a blind eye.

Then there's the shit they pull on ethnic chinese living overseas - some even born overseas and with one non-chinese parent. They are bad bad bad, the Chinese Communists.

Could please provide a source/sources for this? I am not sure what this is about. - Thank you. (NB. Perhaps China deserves its own thread, at some point?)

  • I haven't read this article fully Wesley, but it seems to be putting a balanced view of what's happening in Australia and is from a reputable source. It can be mined for more info through its copious links. I personally hate what the Chinese Communist Party does to its people and am extremely biased. I think another thread is warranted. If I get some time later today I will finish looking at this article and use it as the kick-off point for a new thread.
  • The stuff about harassing people from mixed backgrounds came from an interview I saw on TV of an Aussie with partly chinese heritage who was a china specialist working for a think-tank. He was getting it because he was chinese (in the eyes of the Party) and commenting on political issues in china. "It" included threats on social media etc, and open tails.
  • But seriously - re: Avocados. They don't have a taste?! Do they?

Right after tRump had threatened to close the border, the shipments of avocados to the US from Mexico doubled. Now we have a glut of avocados.

Note to Anselmina: Avocados do have a slight taste, but we NorteAmericanos (North Americans) like to use them for guacamole in which you mash them and add spices to them. Also used in salads. And they can be used to tamp down other spicy foods.
  • At the moment I am trimming the pine trees up the back with two types of motorised saws and repairing fences. I come here to rest, and go off when things engage me. I'm not up to posting really important threads like the one on China suggested above. This may change, but I don't think it will till Mid-may, when I come back from leave.

tRump is now considering dumping undocumented South Americans in sanctuary cities. A little vindictive shall we say?
