There have been some lovely cartoons (!) in tribute to James Earl Jones.

I especially liked the one where St Peter asks JEJ, at the Pearly Gates, if he (JEJ) would be happy to take on the task of being The Voice of God, pro tem, God Himself being super-busy just now...

Another showed JEJ, newly arrived in Heaven, hearing the actual voice of God saying to him *I am your Father*...

  • Former Peruvian tyrant Alberto Fujimori has died. He pioneered methods of destroying a democracy from within while holding elected office.
  • Kenneth Cope, who played the ghost Marty Hopkirk in Randall and Hopkirk, Deceased, has just died, aged 93. His partner in the series, Mike Pratt, died in 1976.
  • I have a scenario playing in my head where they both meet up in white suits and Marty says to Geoff "where the heck have you been?".
  • Kenneth Cope was one of my favourite TV actors, way back, but Randall & Hopkirk, Deceased never appealed to me.
  • Me neither, though it was an interesting concept.

I did watch that programme but I mainly remember him as Jed Stone in Coronation Street.

  • Whenever I have heard Kenneth Cope's name over the years I pictured Jed Stone - usually accompanied by Minnie Caldwell.
  • Ah, Sunny Jim!
  • He was also on That Was the Week That Was, a truly ancient satire programme. 62-63, I think.

I remember that so it can't be that ancie- oh, wait.
  • Hehe...

I'm afraid that, if anyone had asked me years ago if Kenneth Cope was still alive, I'd have told them that, in fact, he'd died before Randall & Hopkirk (Deceased) was filmed...

    I'll get me coat.
  • Stopping in briefly to mention Australian actor Lex Marinos has died. For those of who were kids in the '70's we knew him as Bruno the son in law of the awful Ted Bulpitt in TV's Kingswood Country. He also worked on many other productions including The Slap in more recent times. I very much enjoyed him on "Back in Time for the Corner Shop" where he described his parents' migrant experience and running cafes in rural parts of NSW. My Mum always used to look forward to seeing him on TV as she had taught him at Sunday School back in the day, though I don't know how old he was at the time, or for how long she had taught him.
  • David Graham has died aged 99, the voice of Peppa Pig's grandfather, the Daleks and, most famously, Lady Penelope's chauffeur Parker in Thunderbirds.

That was fun, putting the commas in that...

I've heard him as Parker and a Darlek and I would never have thought it was the same person.

I've sometimes wondered what the magic-realist thatcherite Vargas Llosa would have been like as president.

Absolutely. A good long life, well lived. RIP Dame Maggie.
  • Oh, Maggie
  • Dame Maggie has been one of my favourite actors for soo long! She will be sadly missed - but I am looking forward to all the replays of her work I expect to see on TV in the coming days.

I heard about Kris Kristofferson and burst into tears. I'm not sure if they were for him or my first boyfriend who introduced me to his music and died when he was 24.
  • Thanks Kris for The Good Times.

Unable to imagine Kris Kristofferson at 88, he stays so much younger in my mind.
  • Basketball Hall of Famer Dikembe Mutombo has died of brain cancer. He was 58.

Ach - that's sad. I'm sorry for your (remembered) loss.

    KEN TOBIAS: 1945–2024
It is with deep sadness I share the news that my dear, sweet brother, Ken Tobias, passed away peacefully on October 2, 2024, at the age of seventy-nine at the Saint John Regional Hospital, in his home town of Saint John, New Brunswick. Ken had been battling brain cancer for the past two months.
Kenneth Wayne Paul Tobias is survived by his mother, Laura Tobias, 100, of Saint John, his brother, Tony Tobias of Toronto, and his nephew/brother, Conan Tobias of Toronto. We are grateful to the nurses, doctors, and staff of the Saint John Regional Hospital for their care of Ken. We are especially grateful and indebted to Ken’s dear friend Jackie Ainsworth, R.N., who was there for Ken throughout his final months, applying her nursing care skills with ultimate love and compassion.
While we are all trying to imagine a world without Ken, we can be grateful for the joy and beauty Ken brought to the world for more than sixty years, through his outstanding songwriting, recordings, live performances, and beautiful visual art. His music legacy will be with us to share for decades. So today, while we grieve for Ken in our own way, maybe we can listen to a Ken Tobias song or two. I would recommend his signature song, “Dream #2.’’ The lyrics speak to Ken’s artistic approach to life, that if you can imagine, you can make things happen. He drew a picture of a pair of wings because he wanted to fly. And Ken most certainly attained flight through the beauty of his art, and he brought us all along to soar through universe with him. I am so proud of my brother and his legacy. He has left a beautiful mark on this world and touched the hearts and souls of so many. Rest in beauty, my brother.
  • Frank Fritz from American Pickers died a few days ago. I always enjoyed the program and observing the friendship of Mike and Frank. I was sorry to read that he'd experienced poor health over the last couple of years.

    Thanks @ChastMastr.

The weirdest thing was being in a bookshop, a couple of years later picking up a newly published book by a poet whom I knew was a friend of Alan's, and reading a poem about his life and death.

It was so gentle and captured his essence with compassion,

I've been wondering if Kristofferson is gonna have the opening lines to Bird On A Wire engraved on his tombstone.

He pledged that to Leonard Cohen, and Cohen wrote in the liner notes for his Grestest Hits album "I'll be hurt if he doesn't."
