What does someone's favourite Christmas carol say about them?

Armchair psychology time!

I was pondering this evening that my minister has named "It was on a starry night" as his favourite carol [I'm not going to get pedantic about strict definitions of "carol"; for the purposes of this thread it is any song associated with Christmas commonly sung in church]; I, on the other hand, would probably go for "Of the Father's love begotten".

Could you guess from these choices our respective personalities? Church backgrounds? Anything else?

IDK the answer to your question, but the last phrase of that carol always makes me think of the refrain to this. I’m not sure I ever watched it, but I can remember my Dad singing it to us for some reason.
  • Oh Come all ye faithful is mine. I eagerly await analysis.

Hmm... I think it says you're someone who mostly attends only on Christmas Eve/Day, finds the likes of Away in a manger a bit twee but appreciates a good bellow of "O come let us adore Him, CHRIST THE LORD!!!"

In a time of free praise and worship at any time of year at my old church, we would often sing just that bit at any time of the year.

My favourite bit is, "Word of the father, now in flesh appearing"

I take it you're referring to That Chord (on "Word" in the Willcocks arrangement), which gladdens the hearts of church musicians the world over? That tells me you've got excellent taste! :)

Whenever I'm asked for my favourite carol, I usually say Unto us is born a Son - again preferably in the Willcocks arrangement, but I have so many that I truly love it would be very hard to just pick out one.

I would be tempted to assume that you are a closet Jacobite.
  • It's hard to pick out just one, but I usually come back to Child in the manger, sung to the lovely Bunessan, of course. The simple poetry of it will always stay with me, and the connection to some much-loved places is important too. I am not sure what it says about me... A simple soul, perhaps.

If I was, wouldn't I need to know about it ?
  • I you were you would.
