We've just watched the first episode. I think it's all on iPlayer now but I haven't the energy or inclination to watch any more.

I'm in the middle of season 1 of Batwoman. I like Kate Kane, and her complicated relationship with "Alice", the main antagonist of the season, and it's just on the edge of how dark I can tolerate - I can't take too much blood and violence, but in this case the story is intriguing enough to keep me watching.

Just to clarify - I expect we will watch them, just not a binge-watch, which is what we've sometimes done with it!
  • I need to see Creature Commandos, the first completely canonical part of the new DC cinematic universe. Suicide Squad II and Peacemaker, plus some elements of Blue Beetle, have parts that are going to be canonical, but this is the first completely canonical entry.
  • Sounds good @ChastMastr, I know my family members would enjoy it!

Tonight we are going to sit as a family and watch the new Wallace and Gromit. Daughter and husband have been on holidays from work and we've all enjoyed Wallace and Gromit since they were small children. It will be a lovely way to finish off the holidays before work begins again.

We didn't get the opportunity to watch it together with our grown-up kids (who also enjoyed Wallace and Gromit very much when growing up) but I did text my daughter after my husband and I watched it this evening, to say she absolutely has to watch it! I think it's the best Wallace and Gromit film since the original three shorts. So much fun and so many great jokes. Our favourite moment was the "high speed chase" on the canal, with the little old lady walking her dog on the towpath making better time than the narrowboats.

  • @Trudy, we loved the little cameo from Farmer Mossybottom from Shaun the sheep. So many little funnies which flashed past! It was really well done and we all loved it. Such a happy way to spend a Saturday evening. It's not often that we are all together.

We need to watch the new Wallace and Gromit film again (having watched it on Christmas Day with our son and his fiancé) as there are clearly things we missed. The films have always been a firm favourite with our family. I hadn't realised quite how much our children had taken them on board until I overheard them playing in the garden one day. Our son, aged about 4, opened the door of the Wendy house to his sister (about 7) with the words, "Won't you come in? We were about to have some cheese."

We've caught up on the new series of The Traitors now (first three episodes), plus the corresponding Traitors Uncloaked. In one sense I hate the whole premise of it, but it's one of the few things my husband and I both enjoy enough to want to watch together and our offspring and their partners watch it too, so we have family message exchanges about it.

So many little gags in Wallace & Gromit that anyone outside of the UK probably won't get. Newsreader Anton Dec for one. And the very Northern specific jokes like 'No Parkin' and 'Madame Butter Pies'. I think my favourite reference was the book 'Gardens of the Galaxy' by Alan Tichmartian (initially I thought it was Alien Tichmarsh, which would have worked too). Plus all the little call-backs - I knew exactly what would happen when Feathers removed his rubber glove hat, and I wasn't disappointed.

Also Wallace being completely unaware that Gromit doesn't speak, and not seeing why 'voice activated' was a problem. Genius.

The small details are what make Wallace & Gromit so good. It’s always worth looking at a newspaper headline or a sign in the background. In the most recent one Clegg’s ( Last of the Summer Wine) raincoat and cap were hanging on the coat hook by the door as a tribute to the great Peter Sallis

Well, up to you. What TV do you like?

We used to have an annual thread for Doctor Who. But not recently because the Disney Corp. makes watching it so much more painful. But did anybody else watch the Christmas special?

I liked it, but it was not perfect. Ncuti Gatwa makes for a pleasant Doctor, although I do wish he would resist the temptation to be romantically attracted to every single character he meets. I mean, yeah, I get it, it's a character trait. But it gets in the way of good stories.

To be fair, there has NEVER been a perfect Doctor Who episode. Oddly, that is what makes the show so great.

  • Are we talking about the Christmas special with Nicola Coughlan? I watched it and enjoyed it. Even if I'm not a regular Dr Who watcher, I think I gave it away after Matt Smith, I like the Christmas specials.

I'd be interested in the answer to that too.

Doctor Who used to be non-negotiable viewing when I was a kid, and when I was at university the TV lounge was always packed at the appropriate time on a Saturday (late afternoon/early evening). When it came back after its long break, with Christopher Eccleston, we watched it as a family and went through the Tennant era before stopping again. I've heard from friends that the Christmas special was good, so we must make a point of trying it.

I watched it on iplayer with some trepidation because I had seen so many adverse comments. But I thought it was pretty good, and the twist at the end made it worthwhile.

Just being on Disney+. I miss the days when BBC America would show it. And maybe it is just me, but Disney does not do much to promote it. I only watch 2 things on that streaming platform: Doctor Who and the 1950s Zorro series. And I saw no notices at all that the Christmas Special was coming and, even when it was available for viewing, it still took a day before I finally saw them mention its existence.

By contrast, Disney had no trouble notifying me constantly of every Star Wars and Marvel Comics spinoffs coming down the line. Disney is not (IMHO) doing Doctor Who any favors.

The special itself was enjoyable. Not perhaps a classic, but a fun way to spend an hour. I wonder when the new season will start. Obviously, Disney won't tell me....

I can recommend lots of other things on Disney+, but if you are not interested in more than Zorro and Doctor Who, they may not be of interest to you. I do agree they should promote it more.

The new season is expected in May—

My partner loved Are You Being Served, Keeping Up Appearances, and the David Suchet Poirot mysteries especially.
  • Just discovered Paranormal Night Shift on YouTube. I like ghost shows, but the ones retelling people’s experiences or legends, rather than the ones with people stumbling around in the dark with night vision cameras and such.

I have happy memories of the Disney Zorro series - I managed to find them on DVD, for the German market - though you can switch it back to the English soundtrack. I can now sing the Zorro song in German!
  • I had no idea Zorro is on Disney+. I must look for it.

SAS - Rogue Heroes is well-made, but hardly appropriate for the season of peace and goodwill. And, as the opening caption says, NOT history. Though the depicyion of Paddy Mayne is, one gathers, fairly accurate.

    First series was great fun.
Haven't had a chance to start series 2 yet
  • I need to finish the series I’ve started, in some cases a few years ago.

    GeGeGe No Kitato
    DuckTales
    Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur
    Beware the Batman
    Superman: The Animated Series

Though I do want to jump into Creature Commandos.

Normally, I don't have the time available to binge watch anything. However, the Creeping Crud™ has defeated me, so yesterday, I caught up with the latest episodes of Ghost and started watching Elsbeth which reminds me of the old Columbo series.
  • Over the last couple of weeks I've been watching Stella, with Ruth Jones as the title character. I've only seen her in Gavin and Stacey a couple of years ago, and I really enjoyed her in this. It's quite the soapie!!

Elsbeth is great fun. The series is a spin off from The Good Wife, and the Elsbeth Tascioni character (scatty and brilliant) who appeared regularly in The Good Wife deserved to be preserved.

Ghost or Ghosts? And if the latter, the UK or US version?

    Noel Fielding’s Luxury Comedy?

  • I’ve never seen the movie. But I hear it’s not very connected to the movie?
  • TrudyTrudy Shipmate, Host Emeritus
You do not have to have seen the movie to appreciate the TV series. They have the same premise but completely different characters and plot. And the characters are really what make the TV show.
  • Yay!
  • I finally caught up with the Call the Midwife Christmas special, I always enjoy episodes where Reggie makes an appearance.

I find it a useful series for trying to understand a bit more about Britain in the 20h century especially the post-war period, which from an Aussie perspective, we don't hear a lot about. I note that currently they are getting fairly close to when I was born timewise and a lot of demolition of older buildings is occurring and I notice the modernization beginning to happen. It makes me think of how when my parents were growing up, no one had an inside toilet, that my parents probably thought they were Christmas for having one in their first home, in the bathroom, every house we lived in ever after had a separate one with the bathroom only having the basin, shower and bathtub.

I wonder if it's as much factual in the way that Neighbours or Home and Away don't represent the way all Australians live.
  • Finally started Creature Commandos!
  • I hope you enjoy it @ChastMastr.

I realised at the weekend, that I'd never watched Death in Paradise from the beginning. So I began and am on to season 2 now and enjoying it. I love seeing actors I know from other things making 1 episode appearances.
  • We've been getting our annual fix of Digging for Britain. All available on the iPlayer, but we are doing it the old fashioned way and watching them on the night broadcast, or catching up later.

Good local stuff in the second one - the dinosaur foot prints are only about 10 miles from us.
