The thread I referenced in the OP started with a post containing "Tr*** M***s" which baffled me for quite a while as we don't have a Trago Mills superstore anywhere near us and I've never been to one. I suspect they are UK only so our non-UK shipmates couldn't be expected to know what it stood for.

It’s even more niche than that - there’re only 4 branches, and only one of those is outside Devon and Cornwall. It’s a pretty safe bet most people in the UK won’t have heard of Trago Mills when written in full, never mind asterisked!

Though, having been to the ‘super’ Newton Abbott, and rather less ‘super’ Falmouth branches in my time living in the south west, I did recognise the South West in-joke of asterisking it to preserve sensitive reading local souls from the pure horror.

Is Trago Mills like a posh Mole Valley Farmers or something else entirely?
  • Very different, I think. I've never been, but: https://www.trago.co.uk/merthyr-tydfil-store

Exact opposite - it started life as a sort of cheaper version of Wilko*. but with (in Newton Abbott) an attached ‘fun park’ - known in the south west as ‘Janner Disneyland’ (a Janner being someone from Plymouth).

Falmouth is more like an independent hardware shop

*for overseas readers Wilkinson/Wilko was a chain of discount home and hardware products.

This seems to have been thoroughly discussed to the point of tangent.
