Guide me O thou great Jehovah
Turn your eyes upon Jesus (an oldie, but with some extra verses I'd never sung before)
    All I once held dear
Here is bread, here is wine (yes, it was a communion service)
O my soul, take courage, you were born for a time like this (Hallelujah, Jesus Saves - a new one to me)

    Parish Communion, Easter5.

All my hope on God is founded - Michael
Good Christians all, rejoice and sing- Gelob’t Sei Gott ( Vulpius)
The Church’s one foundation - Aurelia
Gifts of bread and wine ( Christine McCann)
Thy hand O God has guided - Thornbury, all 6 verses.

Nobody except the organist knew Gifts of bread and wine, but as it was the hymn during Communion, we got away with it.

    Mass of St Thomas.

Gifts of Bread and wine was written in the 60s during the first flurry of doing English rather than Latin in the RCC, and should have died then. The tune is unbelievably dreary. I have no idea why the CofE with its superb body of hymns should be opting for such drivel.

I shall not mind if I never have to sing it again.

Today we visited Ampleforth Abbey for Sunday Mass with Confirmations.

    Hymns:
Come down O Love divine, Down Ampney
    Come Holy Ghost, Tallis Ordinal
    All creatures, Lasst uns erfreuen

The Commons were chanted to the Missa de Angelis.

The school choir sang the following motets rather well:
The spirit of the Lord is upon me, Edward Elgar
    God’s grandeur, Philip Wilby
    A child’s prayer, James MacMillan
    Totus tuus , Henryk Gorecki

The chapel in its setting on the edge of the North York Moors is wonderful.

That's interesting ... originally TYEUJ was the refrain of a hymn which begins "O soul, are you weary and troubled?". I've sung that; but I've also sung (as you have) extra versions of the refrain, which has sprung free from its original context.

    Easter 6/Christian Aid Sunday tomorrow:

Alleluia, alleluia, hearts to heaven and voices raise (Lux Eoi)
When I needed a neighbour (Neighbour)
    Alleluia, sing to Jesus (Hyfrydol)
One more step along the world I go (Southcote)

The second hymn reflects the Christian Aid theme, and the final hymn is in honour of the baptisms (during the Mass) of a young mother and her two small daughters...they've been regular attenders for some months now.

Last week sang Howell's Pray for the peace of Jerusalem. I found it psychologically painful.

Today I visited St Gile’s, Edinburgh.

Praise the Lord his glories show, Llanfair
Not to us be glory given (psalm 115), Lux Eli
God is love, let heavens adore him, Abbot’s Leigh

    The choir sang:
    If ye love me, Tallis
    Glory be, Ridout
Kyrie and Gloria of the Spatzenmesse, Mozart
O taste and see, Jack Oates

    The organist played:
    préambule, Viennese
    Climat, Alain
    Postlude on a ground, Merrill

    The Servant King (Kendrick)
Now thank we all our God (Nun Danket)
Let Justice Roll (a song written by a member of the church to fit with our Amos reading today)
Sing To God New Songs of Worship (Ode to Joy) [this was on the sheet, but was skipped because we ran out of time]
    Tell out my soul (Woodlands)

  • *swoons*

You sang something by Kendrick, and missed out music written by Beethoven ?

O! O! O! Is Great and Aweful Outrage!!!
  • Our service began with a recording of Tallis's "If you love me".

“O the deep, deep love of Jesus” - Ebenezer.
“A new commandment” - its own tune.
“Jesu, Jesu, fill us with your love” - its own tune.
“Come down, O Love divine” - Down Ampney.
“The love of God comes close” - Rhosymedre.
“May the mind of Christ my Saviour” - St Leonard's.

Or not, perhaps, in context ...

(FWIW, I think The Servant King is Kendrick at his best, and I always used to enjoy singing it).

Service of Holy Communion in another village church in our group. Retired priest - her first visit. Late start as she got lost, then couldn’t find the way in. Entrance is behind the church with only a grass path, so not obvious. Service was chaotic, and one hymn ( I the Lord of sea and sky) was missed out.

First- Jesus where e’re thy people meet.
    Last- Love divine
    One more, I can’t recall.

The service was billed as Common Worship but in practice it was BCP.
Furniture in the church is placed most inconveniently and the priest gave communion to people who had come out of their pews, standing in the aisle. Most odd.

Our offerings for Easter 6 at St Pete's:

Alleluia, sing to Jesus - Hyfrydol
Breathe on me, breath of God Carlisle
Great is thy faithfulness - Runyan
    He is Lord*
And can it be - Sagina

    * which was far too short for a Communion hymn, as the church was full. We ended up singing it twice 🙄, which upset a gentleman in the congregation (who has recently joined the choir, but is an advocate for silence if we run out of verses). I rather think he has a point.

    We had:
Crown him with many crowns (DIADEMATA)
All people that on earth do dwell (OLD 100TH)
I heard the voice of Jesus say (ROWAN TREE)
    When I survey (ROCKINGHAM)

  • Did anyone go to church and sing hymns yesterday? Time was, when Ascension Day was an important occasion, but it seems to be somewhat neglected now...

Our Place had two services - 10am and 730pm - and AFAIK they were going to have hymns at the evening Mass.

Double entry from me today: Scottish Voices sang Evensong in St Ninian's Episcopal Church in Troon yesterday (their priest is a member of the choir):

Introit: Christ has no body now but yours - David Ogden

    Responses - Clucas

Psalm 85; on the copies, the composer was just given as the initials "SEAM". Having done a bit of googling, I think it's probably Sarah MacDonald, the organist at Selwyn College. It was a very nice chant.

Mag & Nunc - Walmisley in D major - a decent enough piece, but I can see why the setting in D minor is better known.

Anthem - Ye choirs of new Jerusalem - Stanford

    Hymns:
Eternal monarch, king most high - Gonfalon Royal
All hail the power of Jesus' name - Diadem - I'd forgotten how much fun that tune is to sing!

It was a most excellent day, and the hospitality we received was second to none. 🙂
A bit more prosaic at a half-empty St Pete's today (but a few decent hymns):

The head that once was crowned with thorns - St Magnus
God forgave my sin - Freely, Freely
O worship the King - Hanover
    Broken for me
Crown him with many crowns - Diademata

    Easter 7 aka Ascension Sunday:

The head that once was crowned with thorns (St Magnus)
O thou, who at thy Eucharist didst pray (Song 1)
I danced in the morning (Lord of the dance))
See the conqueror mounts in triumph (Rex Gloriae)

Not a bad selection IMHO, though they may have used a different tune for the final hymn.
  • ETA:

Yes, they sang See the conqueror to the better-known (at Our Place) Hyfrydol.

    A good attendance, too.

Ascension Sunday Communion: no sermon, and so five hymns.

Only half the normal congregation in attendance, but sung lustily (where applicable)

Rejoice! The Lord is King (Darwall)
Before the Throne of God Above (Vikki Cook)
    Jesus Stand Among us (Kendrick)
    In Christ Alone (Townend)
At the Name of Jesus (Woodlands)
  • Ascension/Christian Aid.

“God is gone up on high” - Darwall's 148th.
“There is a Redeemer” - Melody Green.
“Beauty for brokenness” - Graham Kendrick.
“Forgive us when our deeds ignore” (suggested by Christian Aid) - Llef,
“Where cross the crowded ways of life” - Fulda.

Here in Durham for the Eucharist we had:
Hail the day that sees him rise - Llanfair
O thou, who at thy Eucharist didst pray - (Song 1)

Gloria, Sanctus and Agnus Dei from Rheinberger’s Mass in E flat, and a setting of O sacrum convivium by Daniel Cook (Master of the Choristers and Organist)

Alas, our minister is back to his old repetitive ways:
    Morning has broke
    Great is thy faithfulness
    Be thou my vision
    From heaven you came
    Look forward in faith

Seriously, we had "to whom shall we go? You have the words of life" as the reading and this was all you could come up with?

    Men's voices at evensong.

    Plainsong responses
Dyson in C - a very fast dramatic Mag, and a softer Nunc
Anthem: Let all mortal flesh - arr Cleobury
Psalm 47 from The Blue Book

    Hymns:

    Come let us join (Nativity)
The head that once (St Magnus)
REjoice the Lord is king (Gopsal) - I was surprised to see @Anna_Baptist sang this to Darwell, we always use Gopsal.
    Crown him with many (Diademata)

We were banned from singing the descant for Nativity. Probably a good call.

It felt really odd singing the melody lines throughout hymns and psalm

Will you come and follow me (Kelvingrove)
Come, Holy Ghost, our souls inspire (Mechlin)

I rather like this hymn about the Holy Spirit, but it's a bit radical for Our Place:

Some of the recordings seem a bit slow, though this one's not too bad.

    Whit Sunday (aka Pentecost)

Come People Of The Risen King (Stuart Townend)
Spirit Of The Living God (Daniel Iverson)
O Breath Of Life, Come Sweeping Through Us (Spiritus Vitae)
O God Of Burning, Cleansing Flame (Lex Loizides)

We had a new pianist this morning. One who is used to playing in a Praise Band where the tune is supplied by a singer. Good to have him there, but it could have gone better. I hope he learns from the experience.

  • Indeed. It took Our Place's volunteer organist a while to get used to our traditional hymns/Mass settings (she sparkles on grand piano or recorder!), but she does really well these days.

Spirit Of The Living God (Daniel Iverson)
Point of personal privilege: When Daniel Iverson wrote “Spirit of the Living God,” he was pastor of the church where my family has deep roots and where I’d later grow up. He baptized my father there a few years before he wrote “Spirit of the Living God.”

Eventually, he accepted a call to another church 800+ miles away. That happened to be the church where my mother-in-law grew up, and he eventually officiated at the wedding of my mother-in-law and my father-in-law.

Both my family and my wife’s family remained close to the Iversons over the years; Dr. Iverson and his wife are buried near my wife’s grandparents. Not surprisingly, “Spirit of the Living God” has long had a special place in both my family and my wife’s family.

    Today we had:

“Come, Holy Ghost, Our Souls Inspire”/VENI CREATOR SPIRITUS
“Breathe on Me, Breath of God”/TRENTHAM
“Lord, Listen to Your Children Praying”
    “As the Wind Song”/WAIRUA TAPU

We sang Many are the lightbeams. It's a lovely hymn for Pentecost.
The words are by Cyprian of Carthage translated first into Swedish and then into English by David Lewis, and the tune is a traditional Swedish tune. For some reason the hymn is attributed to Marty Haugan.

Haugen wrote the arrangement of the tune that appears in some hymnals.
