SoF Mystery Worships on reddit

Did anybody here know that Ship of Fools Mystery Worships were discussed on the r/Christianity subreddit about 13 years ago? Thread title...

A website, Ship of Fools, sends out "mystery worshippers" to give reviews of churches. What do you think of this?

I stumbled across it by accident an hour or so ago. Relatively short discussion, mostly positive, with a coupla politely expressed reservations.

There were a heck of a lot more MW reports in those days so not surprised.

It used to be the best known feature of the magazine. I would go as far as to say it was influential, but it’s now way past its former glory

I discovered the Ship when I did a search for a particular church name and found a Mystery Worship report and was intrigued.
Signed up there and then- 13 years ago.

Unfortunately true. I climbed on board the Old Ship after I was alerted to a report on my former

    That was in late 2001

I first heard about the Ship when the cathedral in St John's was MWed in the mid 2000s.
  • It won't surprise anyone that I think my first encounter with the Ship involved the sickest jokes competition.

I found the Ship after reading an article in the AGO magazine where Fred Swann pretty much was not happy reading about the Mystery Worshipper reports. Sounded good to me, so twenty-five years ago this month I became a sailor on this Ship!

    What is "the AGO magazine"?
  • I assume the American Guild of Organists’ magazine.

Not Mystery Worshipper, but the famous T’n’T, which I believe the blessed and much missed Janine hosted. That was on the Ship before last, I think, in 2004.
Had to do ten posts as an apprentice before you could post in Hell and mix it with Rook, Sine Nomine and Ken 😮😮😮

I believe my first encounter with the ship was with the Church Of Fools/St Pixels. Which would have been in the mid naughties. Didn't become a Mystery Worshipper until I moved to London in 2013.

One I do recall specifically, was scouring Twitter and finding someone requesting that they be MW'd. I left it a few months, but when I did visit , I printed the tweet on the back of the calling card.

That was the second round. The original T&T was around 2001/2002 for discussion of a special “sex edition” of the magazine.

Yes I recall that: unexciting indeed.

Sometimes I wonder what would have happened if the amalgamated alt-worship and liturgical board didn’t take up my suggestion of “Let’s Talk Tat & Tealights”.

On balance I think Ecclesiantics it better!

I liked Small Fire; totally out of my comfort zone as it was.
