All the best for her @Baptist Trainfan Does the house seem very quiet?

Mr Boogs is a way helping our son with carpentry in his house. Our house seems very quiet!

It's possible that the former is the cause of the latter ;)

  • Most annoying. We had to go to hospital for 6am. She was told she was second on the list. But she just rang: nothing has happened so far.

@Baptist Trainfan how rubbish, hope she gets seen soon and everything gets sorted.

Wrt appendices, when I had a colonoscopy to investigate potential coeliac disease one of the nurses told me that I had a lovely appendix - still one of my favourite compliments!

Still feeling a bit rubbish after my flu jab - nothing serious, just normal immune response side-effects. It's just that having to rest and do nothing when nothing is *really* wrong (in the sense that I don't actually have flu, obviously the aches and fatigue is real) is so boring!
  • Yes, very annoying. All I've had, luckily, was a very slightly sore arm.
  • I hope Mrs BT is soon attended to. Such delays are nothing new - My Old Mum was second on the list for a cataract op (about 40 years ago!), and, although present and correct at the prescribed hour of 8am, wasn't done until late afternoon...
    :grimace:
Another mild and Sun-Shiny day in Arkland the Pleasant, after a cold night and foggy early hours. Tess Coe has been visited (because Monday(, and various items beginning with B have been bought - Bread, Butter, Biscuits, Baked Potatoes, Beef Broth, and BEER - along with a few things starting with other letters...

That seems to be the way of it. I conscientiously turned up at 11 am for all 3 of my recent surgeries, but didn't go to theatre until mid to late afternoon in every instance.
  • It's annoying, isn't it? OTOH, I was told that my brain surgery was timed for 11am, and as I was admitted the previous evening, it was indeed done at the prescribed time. It took nearly 6 hours, though I was unconscious for over 7 hours, before waking up in the Recovery Room...with only a slight headache...

I haven't had such a good sleep since that day in May 2016.

Things seem to have moved on with cataract surgery. From personal experience (surgery on both eyes this year - one in February and one in August) our local eye hospital has them on a production line - six in the morning, six in the afternoon, and sometime another four in the evening. For the first one I turned up at the prescribed hour for the start of the afternoon shift (12.30 p.m.), there was a little delay in starting because the morning shift had overrun, and then found that I was number five. I was out just after 5 p.m.. For the second, also an afternoon shift, I was number two, and was home by around 3 p.m.
  • Having been unsuccessful in contacting my wife, I went to the hospital after my Governors' Meeting and found she'd only just come back onto the ward after her op. All seems well and should be sent home tomorrow. Thanks for the good wishes.

Sending love and prayers for Mrs BT!
Busy day today: although J isn't in on a Monday (grandpa duty), he'd left a shedload of stuff for me to do.

L's replacement, A, started today, and by the end of the afternoon he had produced some work. I suspect I'm not going to have much spare time in the future ... :flushed:
    Piglet's Pancetta Pasta for supper.

So sorry to hear about your friend @Roseofsharon. May she rest in peace and the memories of your time together be a lasting joy. Hope Mrs BT isn’t feeling too sore and gets home tomorrow early.
Last night of our hols today. We’re back in our first hotel having done a loop of the Eugean Hills to the west of Venice. A really interesting place to visit. The people at the next table in our agriturismo were celebrating a birthday and they shared some birthday cake and sparking wine which was lovely and a great way to end the holiday.

Nurses can come up with some good lines. When I was having a spot of bother some time ago I complained to a nurse that I was fed up with this stupid body. "You're lucky you still have one!" said she without hesitating.
  • Thank you to those who have sent condolences. I am feeling more stunned than anything, although I am of an age when friends & old acquaintances are dropping in what feels like rapid succession.
Also feeling guilty about letting our correspondence slacken off in recent years. Neither of us got out much, and found we didn't have anything interesting to say in letters, so it has been just exchange of birthday & Christmas cards, probably since Covid.
  • When I had my second cataract op, 4 weeks ago I was told that I was on the morning list, but they couldn't tell me where exactly until all the expected patients had booked in and the surgeons had arranged them according to some order of priority (which could be changed if any 'emergency' cases had to be fitted in).

The surgeons didn't meet until 9am, whereas the patients & nurses had arrived at 07:30.

I was actually first on the list, but my surgeon was held up, and didn't start until 10.
  • My condolences, RoseofSharon.

Changes in the surgery order can be caused by all sorts of things, from emergency surgery having priority to organising the list around the other obligations of the surgeons present. For example, some surgeries will require the consultant to be present, other surgeries can be supervised by the senior registrar. Often an operating theatre will list quick surgeries first, then the big ones later but it does depend on the staff logistics.

A long day today, as term started at the weekend and I have been busy communicating with students all day, then I taught a tutorial this evening (module overview/young people and poverty). Fresh butterflied sardines, basmati rice and red onion and coriander salsa for a late supper at 9pm.

@Baptist Trainfan hope your wife's op went smoothly and she recovers well.

I am feeling much better today and basically back to normal (just a bit of a lingering headache) - it was quite disconcerting to feel ill when I knew that I wasn't. Almost like a reverse placebo effect.
  • Indeed - glad to hear you're feeling better!

Mild and Sun-Shiny in Arkland the Apprehensive - it's to be cold and wet tomorrow :grimace: - and Pilates has been undertaken, because Tuesday. A good session this week, and much less in the way of Aches and Pains this afternoon.

It can't last - I Shall Pay For It You Mark My Words...

Brunch was eaten at our local Sicilian cafe, and I bought some CHOCOLATE Cannoli for tea. Oddly, they didn't have any Lemon Cannoli today.
    :disappointed:
  • My wife is home, all seems to have gone well.
  • Glad to hear it! Hope she takes things easy for a few days...

The Dragon has been woken up, and is simmering away nicely. Last night was chilly and dank in Arkland, and, with more Chill (spiced with Rain) expected tomorrow, it is now officially Autumn on the Ark.

The first SOUP of the official Autumn will therefore be heated up by the Dragon later - it takes him several hours to reach optimum temperature - and may well be one of the tasty tins of Beef Broth bought yesterday.
  • I think I'd prefer tins of tasty Beef Broth, thank you.

I think (hope) we are having our last unseasonably warm day. It's been 25°, but tomorrow it's supposed to rain (yippee!) and cool down. This may also discourage the disaffected yoof who were setting off firecrackers this morning :astonished: They were about 300 m from my house, clearly visible from 25 floors up. It didn't last all that long, and I spotted some police vehicles, so I'm guessing they got carted off by the fuzz. This is usually a fairly quiet neighbourhood.

The weather here's still really nice; cooling down, but still quite mild and pleasant.

I collected my new contact lenses today, further lightening my bank account, and will give them a try tomorrow.
As it was a Night Church evening, I decided I wanted a hassle-free supper, so I had a BAKED POTATO with CHEESE, and very nice it was too.
  • I did a bit of harvesting around the garden this evening, in advance of the copious rain that we might be getting tomorrow - and more particularly the single figure temperature due tomorrow night. Picked all tomatoes that have started colouring up, the two cucumbers big enough for slicing and the three smallest butternut squash as they are just about ripe.
I'll reassess the chances of anything ripening further once Wednesday night has done its worst.

We’re back on British soil, arriving after a week of very warm summer like Italian weather to a very heavy downpour at Manchester airport. We’re staying the night nearby so not home till tomorrow. I have a load of things to do when I get back, not least a pile of washing.
  • That sounds like a lovely holiday, @Sarasa. Are the renovations at Manchester Airport getting closer to finishing?

How did you find out that the Dragon was 'him'? Am exceeding curious.

I popped the heating on this morning to help dry the washing. I don’t have a tumble dryer.

Yesterday I went to see eldest grandson’s new house. He hasn’t gone far. It is half way between his parents and his grandparents, five minutes from each and eight minutes from work, 20 minutes from me. Very nice though.
I have splashed out and bought a new laptop. Another grandson is coming here on Saturday to help me get it all set up properly, so I should soon be up and running.
  • We have finally had rain here today and my garden office is feeling somewhat cooler; I almost put the heating on and might need to put a jumper in before going back in there later.

Today I’ve done my usual comms, written a tutorial presentation (introduction to mental health module) and written some slides for a meeting. I’m now having a break before heading back later to present an evening tutorial (introduction to public health module).
Lunch was salami and Parmesan omelette. No idea what is for tea.

Have you ever looked into getting a heated airer? The cylindrical rotating ones in particular are very good.

It’s really only this time of year I have any problems when it’s too wet to put washing out. When the heating is on it dries well enough indoors. But thanks for the recommendation.

I have caught up with lots of admin today, actually completing everything on today’s To Do list. Choir this evening.

We're back home after our holiday and I STILL have the cold that I had before we went. I decided not to go to a council meeting tonight as I was coughing so much, though on the whole I do feel a bit better. Hopefully a good nights sleep will mean I can do all the things planned for tomorrow.
It's annoying as it was probably one of the nicest holidays we've had, fantastic scenery a good mix of walking and sightseeing and some amazing food, but I've enjoyed it so much more if I hadn't been feeling rather grim with the cold and my dodgy hip a lot of the time.
  • PigletPiglet All Saints Host, Circus Host
Sorry to hear your cold hasn't shifted, Sarasa, but glad you had a good holiday.

Another bonny day here: I didn't realise just how bright it was until I was part way down the street, and I hadn't brought my sun specs. Consequently got dazzled, and even worse on the way home. 😎

Supper was a cobblement of chickpeas, lardons, tomatoes, green beans and orzo, and fortunately quite nice, as there's enough for tomorrow.
  • We had a dazzling experience on our early trip to the supermarket yesterday.
We drove to the end of our road, turned onto the main road and found ourselves blinded by the early morning sun, which hit our eyes just below the level of the shades - so totally unable to see, and in a (fortunately pre-rush-hour) stream of traffic, with a parked delivery lorry on our left.
I have no idea what Mr RoS was thinking, but we ended up with the car sitting on a bollard in the middle of the road. Fortunately, once he extricated the car the bollard bounced back nicely. Car seemed to be OK so we continued to the supermarket. It was already booked in for MOT & service at the w/e so the garage will check it over then. Not using it beforehand anyway.

Managed to get two loads of washing dried outside on the line after that supermarket trip. Tomorrow is, supposedly, going to be dry & sunny, so will try & get another line of washing out, if I can get it in the machine early enough.
  • I can sympathise with your dazzling experience - I'm glad no damage was done nor hurt sustained. When I went for my swim today the light was dazzling too and I had to shield my eyes to see where I was going.

Definitely a washing day here, though rain is forecast later.

We’ve had the heating on low today as it’s quite cold.
  • I'm afraid that we do feel the cold so the heating has been on for some time, at least first thing in the mornings.

Glad to hear Mrs BF is home and all is well. Also glad you had a good time away @Sarasa but sorry to hear the cold is hanging around.

We had a good few days away and I much enjoyed having food put in front of me without my having to think about it, prepare it, or clear up after it. Now back and catching up on the washing while the sun shines. It's bright and chilly here but Casa Nen remains cosy so far, thanks to its heat-retaining properties.

We're just back from the interment of my niece's ashes. The plot is rather lovely and is in a place that she used to play in as a child before they built the new crem on the fields. It is still a total bugger that she dies aged 28 though.
I was supposed to be having an evening talking to cubs about civic duties, but a key member of the Town Hall team is off sick so we've cancelled them. We've also cancelled an event tomorrow. Both things are good for me as hopefully I'll be feeling more the ticket when it comes to the three events planned for Saturday. I'm off to email the officer concerned to check he is OK as I have a horrible feeling I've given him this cold and as he has various long-term health issues that would not be a good thing.
  • Hope your cold is soon gone @Sarasa. Even after these things depart, the tiredness seems to last for aeons...

After yesterday's almost incessant Rain, it's a lovely warm, Sun-Shiny day in Arkland the Blessed. The night was chilly and dank, but a brisk and refreshing north-west breeze is making everything more cheerful.

Tess Coe has been visited, because Thursday, and yet more Essentials bought for the Cupboard Of Doom™, as in Beef Broth, Mushy Peas, and a Meat Pudding. The latter is only suitable for the popty-ping, so may well have to be eaten before the Apocalypse.

Lunch is the second FISH CAKE, with the usual CHIPS n'MUSHY PEAS.

Some Railway Muddling Modelling is called for this afternoon, as I've acquired a few items to help me develop my little table-top H0e/009 layout...

You'd better check your Plimsoll Line ... or else you might have something of a Sinking Feeling.

  • :grimace:

No Plimsoll Line, but the waterline certainly needs a good coat of Tar...

My Cousin R says he'll come and do the job for me, but the logistics are always awkward - low tide in the middle of the day, and fine (or at least dry) weather. The Plan is to get it done before the end of this month, if possible.
