What did you do while the Ship was in drydock?

jedijudyjedijudy Heaven Host
This thread is in homage to the long ago thread by the same (?) name! Miss_Molly posted on that one, that's how long ago it was. :innocent:

The first couple of days, I wasn't even aware we were landlubbers. My family and I were away on a little adventure, but where we were staying had the most horrible WiFi. (Among several other things that went wrong.) So, I couldn't even check the Ship, which was a very empty feeling!

When we returned this past Monday, the message about not being able to access the Ship was a bit of a shock. So, I did a lot of laundry, helped the kitties to remember their manners, made some phone calls (I hate calling businesses :confounded:) and checked the Ship at least three times a day.

I wish I could say that I organized my room, but that didn't happen! :joy:

Hopefully y'all had a lot more interesting time in drydock!

I read the new Becky Chambers book (and nearly cried multiple times). And watched the new season of The Diplomat. Oh and helped make Little Miss Feet's hallowe'en costume: she went as a member of a Vicious Gang Of Keep Left Signs.

    Gardening.

And checking the link to see if the Ship was back. 🚢
  • I come to The Ship on my iMac, which is in my bedroom, and which I check most times I go in there. That can be several times during the day.

I spotted The Ship's absence fairly early on, and guessed why I was finding a blank page so, tried Facebook and eventually found a post there that confirmed my guess.
But, I continued checking the site each time I was in the bedroom, on the premise that even if I had not found TheShip back in business half an hour ago it might've returned in the meantime.

Today was a busy day, so had not checked, wouldn't you know, until it had been up and running for more than 12 hours!

Me too. I had e-mailed @Simon to see if the Ship had in fact sunk, and he e-mailed back explaining the reason for the downage, which is what I had suspected.

I had intended to MW a church last Sunday with the expectation (hope?) that the Ship would be back up by the time I was ready to file the report. But upon arriving, I learned that the service had been canceled due to the pastor being ill. The weather is supposed to be bad this Sunday, but I may try to go next week.
  • I don't do Twitface, but in desperation looked into Facebook to see if there was anything there about the Ship to alleviate the anxiety. Not a lot! I spent more time reading newspapers on line, which was not a good idea. Should have done more work that badly needs to be done around the house, but currently dealing with a badly b******ed back, this also turned out to be not a good idea. I don't think of the Ship as structured social media. Is it? It's more like a friendly bunch of people I sometimes hang out with, overhearing their conversations and occasionally throwing in an irrelevant comment.
  • First I thought it was my computer. Ranted a bit. Checked back nothing, a few days later the message appeared. I learned how much I like the ship.

I kept checking to see if it was back. The fanfiction site Archive of Our Own (A03) is down too, and the coincidence (actually I suspect it's the same cause.) was upsetting.

    Pined.
  • At first, I kept thinking of things I could have shared on SOF. I also went to an alternative prayer forum (Sacred Space). I did, however manage to finish writing an article early.

    Lesson learned? No!!

    • Mildly fretted that we’d come back online and discover our shipmates had given up and gone away.
    • Actively restrain myself from emailing “are we there yet ?” messages to pease
    • Scrolled too much YouTube
  • Kept checking morning and night as I'd missed any posts saying we were having some time in drydock.

Was very grateful that I saw a post by @ChastMastr asking on social media whether the ship was offline, thanks to whoever replied .

Am feeling much happier now that normal service has resumed!
  • What I actually did on the many occasions I "just looked" to see if The Ship was back, was to click on to Ravelry and read the notes I'd made on all my old projects, or browse my old reading lists from the days when "Bookgroup Online" still existed, or even go through the dozens and dozens of recipes I'd saved from the internet and had never got round to trying (and after the second look will probably still not try most).

Good to be back in the present day.

Hey RR. You mentioned Sacred Space. I see OK--ish (with glasses) but I very recently got into the 'narration' button on there - hearing the meditations and the gospel, instead of reading them. It's really changed the way I use the site, in a very good way - slowed me right down, helped me remember what I'm doing as I go along, oddly - I just mention it here in case anyone else uses the place.

Unfortunately the Return of The Ship has been marred by the arrival of my first batch of marking for the academic year.

    There's a new Becky Chambers book? 😲

I was thinking of Tolkien when I wrote it, though given what I am currently studying, perhaps more of an Homer-type epic is required.

Like @NicoleMR , I was hit by the double whammy of having AO3 down at the same time.
I finished a local history book, New Roots, Ancient Lands by Joseph Emmett, in record time!

I was driven to washing my kitchen floor - a proper on-my-knees scrub rather than a quick mop  . I found myself constantly checking for the first two or three days and I felt more reassured once we got the message that the forums were down for an extended period of maintenance rather than just the site wouldn't load (thank you @pease) . Like @Doublethink I scrolled even more YouTube than I usually do. Then things got busy as we had family staying.

    Hi MiM,
golly, Mrs RR and I have been using Sacred Space for years, but never realised there was a 'dialogue' facility. Well, really ......
I've just tried it. It's very good. PTL.
Our practice is print it out each day's offering and read out alternate passages together in the morning with our tea and biccies. However, now we know that facility is there, we may move to using Mrs RR's laptop. We'll see.
Thank you so much for sharing this!

  • Please don't misunderstand me or take this the wrong way, but I think it did me - and most likely the rest of you - to be away from it for a while.

It happened to coincide with a busy patch - am' dram' rehearsals, council stuff, trying to sort outbsome websites for poetry groups and organise a book launch ...

So the Ship wasn't a distraction.

Like I say, please don't take that the wrong way. I'm glad to see it back but I can be ill-disciplined in my posting habits so a short absence may help me improve that.

For most of the time I was struggling with a particularly nasty UTI. So I spent quite a significant portion of the closure in “the smallest room”.

Sunday 7.10 GMT and the Ship is working for me, Ruth.

And right about the fallen world, particularly IT/AI effects. And COVID.

Snuggly cats are a compensation. Take care now.

Indeed. I stuck a QR code on the side with a link to the clip to assist the bewildered.

I did the same, but just refreshed the page that said it was down for extended maintenance.

I've only just tried browsing from the home page, so it seems that I could have found SoF is back a couple of days ago.
  • Kept refreshing, like any addict. Also got together most of the puzzle pieces for solving (ha!) a problem in our larger family involving a lot of logistics and emotions.

It seems like a lot of us used our time ashore being productive. I'd just as soon not have that excuse again. Then I might actually have to do some organizing. :cold_sweat:
  • I might have done something productive had it been a known period in dry dock, but there was always a chance that the problem had been fixed just a few moments after I last checked.
