  • Our dog is having bladder stone surgery today, and will need to be drugged up till she heals, as she is a mini-Houdini and can get out of anything designed to keep her from biting out her stitches.

    May it all go well.

It took three days for Smokey to stop hissing at our approach, on Sunday she was aloof but tolerated our presence, and now she is rubbing against our legs and purring.

She is longhaired and badly needs brushed, but the hissing resumed when she saw the brush in my hand yesterday.

Her owners collect her on Friday.

Thank you! So far so good. She is completely stoned, but has made no effort so far to escape—which is a great relief.

Mochi is a very capable and adventurous climber. She takes a good run up then shimmies up the trunk using her 4 feet to grip on, like a monkey. She then leaps from branch to branch. Her one failing is that she is not good at testing the weight-bearing abilities of said branches. Hence yesterday I watched her plummet 15 feet from our neighbours’ plum tree.
She landed on her feet unscathed.
  • Our cats also hissed at me when I was teaching them to walk on a lead, I think they (obviously) couldn't understand the change we were introducing to their lives.

I'm glad to hear @Lamb Chopped that your dog is coping ok post surgery and @Heavenlyannie that must have been a bit hair-raising to watch! Cats are amazing!

Aroha isn't particularly amazing today. She missed her litterbox again last night and sprayed against the wall. It's painted so I can wash it, but I think I need to find a bigger litterbox. Maybe an olympic sized swimming pool would do.
  • Oh dear @Huia, that is a real pest. We have two boxes for our cats. One is the small standard one from the supermarket, for whatever reason the cats appear to like that. We have a second larger tray and it also appears to be well used. I should set up a camera to see if both cats are using one tray in preference to the other, or whether each have claimed a tray for themselves. It is hard to work out where and why they behave the way they do!!
  • Last night, my neighbor's dog was attacked by a raccoon. It bit her and racked her eye. The same thing happened to our lab many years ago. At the time, our vet said to make a lot of noise before you let your dog out in the yard at night to scare any wild animals away who might be there. We noticed after that our lab would always bark loudly at the door before going out at night.
  • Molly does not understand changing the clock from daylight saving time. She wanted breakfast and a walk at 6 AM this morning. It is going to be a long week.
  • Oh dear. Best of luck.

A former family dog appeared to know the days of the week. Each Sunday my dad would drive to the newsagency to get the paper and he would be waiting. Not sure if there was some other action my dad did to cause this.

I need to leave early to study 2 days a week and our current dog seems quite put out when I say, "Not now; when I get home."

Aroha peed in the litterbox! She was a bit hit and miss about covering it up, but the intention was there. She's also given up on trying to eat the cat litter which is a relief as I don't know whether the stuff would harm her.

She may not be the brightest cat I have ever shared a home with, buts she;s the snuggliest.
  • Our scaredy-cat calico has decided that the best and least threatening time to be cuddly and social is when the human is trying to nap. I totally see the logic, but it makes for awkward choices…

Good to hear that Aroha is thinking inside the box. We have occasional attempts of one (or possibly both) of them to do otherwise, but we hope that regular maintenance will convince them that there’s lots of space inside without having to aim over the edge.

My three grandkitties have decided that I am indeed not going to make kitty stew out of them. The elder tortie has been very affectionate with me for several years, but hates the marshmallows. The toasted marshmallow boys (they are all three 'itties') have warmed up to me and enjoy pets and attention. No head butts, and the only time I had a lap kitty was when Loki was really ticked at my daughter. He showed her by sitting on my lap for about fifteen minutes!

Today, the three got decorative break-away collars in the style of bowties. The other marshmallow, Drax, gave me a slow blink when I told him how handsome he looked!
  • It sounds as though everyone's kittens are behaving beautifully at present. I've had some success with my daughter's cat, he won't sit on anyone's lap. However, if I have my stable table on my lap for doing computer work, he will come and sit on that and enjoys a bit of a pat. He was such a timid and skittish boy when we first adopted him from the shelter, that I consider this to be real success.

His housemate definitely not skittish, demands to sit on my shoulder and snuggle. Watches me like a hawk when I have my cereal as she hopes to devour any milk dregs I might leave behind if I'm too slow taking my bowl to soak. She really is a horror at times! A horror, but I just love her. I can see she is slowing down a bit and I'm conscious that we might only get another couple of years out of them, having adopted them when the son (now 24) was about 12. I'm totally in their thrall!

She did it again - I think she's finally got the message. She used to be really good when I was away from home regularly and she was going to a cattery, but when she has got more used to just going outside her behaviour regressed.

Tatze and Ted both have Kennel cough. We had a video call with the vet and she said they can have walks but not to meet other dogs.

Tatze had her kennel cough vaccine two weeks ago, it seems to have made no difference - or maybe she'd have been worse without it?

A spoonful of honey twice a day. Tatze loves it, Ted won't touch it. I'm softening their food. Both are eating fine.

Tatze is much worse than Ted, really hoarse, coughy and lethargic, bless her. Ted is his normal self, but sneezy.

Tatze is twelve in April, Ted is three in May.
  • I hope Tatze and Ted are doing ok with the kennel coughs, and making progress back to full health. Is it an infection that generally has period after which they should be recovered? Go back for review?

I am not a dog owner, so have no idea, I know you are totally across all these things, just hoping to understand more myself. I will go and do a bit of reading up now, to learn more. Really just wanting to say get well beautiful pooches!!

It's very challenging sitting in my chair cross stitching with a cat sitting on my lap washing my elbow.

I think she likes the skin cream the doctor prescribed, but I'm not sure it's good for her.

I'm sure it isn't, Huia! Our dogs love to lick post-exercise legs!

Both dogs are much better, thank you @Cheery Gardener. No more coughing or sneezing. 🐾🙂

Kennel cough is like a human cold or flu. It can be mild and short lived or horrible. They are vaccinated against it every year along with their other vaccinations. Tatze had hers only two weeks ago so I do wonder if it was a reaction. They do use live vaccine. 🤔

Animal antics. How are your pets with other animals? I live amid a few, so this is a little long, but I am always entertained or intrigued how our three-and-a-half years Staffie-cross-with-something acts.

I saw more rabbits just then on our morning walk than I ever have. (They are a destructive pest here, but they are cute to me, particularly the babies hopping about now). They can be hopping three metres in front of him and he does not care. Looks and averts his gaze. Similar with kangaroos, but once they start hopping it is as if they have broken some canine rule of behaviour and he gets excited and barks and turns in circles.

I live in a suburban house on the edge of town with nearby properties. Today the cows and sheep (and two new lambs!) were back down this side by the fence. I know we must be careful about anthropomorphising but he has the most quizzical look on his face when looking at them. Every time.

He gets excited about several noisy frogs we have in the backyard at night and is straight out the dog flap to quieten them down.

He pulls at the lead toward cats, but there was (never seen since, sadly) a ginger cat who, for a week or so, would from his driveway sildle up to my dog, who unusually made slow movements toward the cat, and would rub against my dog and then walk away.

    How about your animal companions?

Ginger cats can be amazing, there was one over the back called Barney (his name was on his collar) who visited my fluffball Georgie-Porgy most days. I didn't meet his people until a distressed man turned up on my doorstep to say his cat had gone missing. I asked the cat's name - it was Barney.

"He's not missing, he was hanging out with my cat yesterday, I said "I think he's amazing, but I always make sure he leaves at night. The man whipped out his phone to tell his partner and happy tears were shed. The blokes both worked long hours at the hospital and, I discovered that Barney was well know for visiting around the neighbourhood. One woman who couldn't have a cat said he visited daily for a cuddle and sleep.

He was the reason I raced G-P off to the vet to be spayed, but they were just good friends as B had been neutered. Fluffy ginger kittens would have been lovely, but irresponsible.
  • It has been five years since we lost out beloved English Labrador Hank. Starting to look at maybe another lab from the animal shelter.

    Maybe it is time.
  • Sorry to hear of the anniversary, Gramps49. Best wishes for the decision making.
  • So here was I sitting quietly perusing the ship with cat Domino (see my icon) on my knee, when she begins to heave. She thinks that the hall is a good place to be sick, but I managed to get her out the door into the cold, dark, windy world beyond. I’m sure she will be back in soon….
  • PigletPiglet All Saints Host, Circus Host
Poor Domino - hope she's going to be OK.
  • She’s fine. She just has hidden from the comb for a while, leading to furballs. Today she’s getting the comb whether she likes it or not (not, usually). But not just now when she’s sleeping so peacefully and snoring just a little.
  • PigletPiglet All Saints Host, Circus Host
Isn't it called "purring" when you're a cat?
  • No, there is purring but there is also a sweet little snore.
  • HuiaHuia Shipmate
Aroha, my current cat definitely snores.

I love your icon @Cathscats, Domino looks like the late GeorgiePorgy whom I still miss. She used to purr loudly too.
  • A friend gave us bright flourescent worm-shaped foam-like attachments for our wand toy. We experimented with them today and the cats are quite fascinated. They are definitely consumable goods though - not in the sense of being eaten but certainly in the sense of being destroyed by enthusiastic predation.
  • It has been storming all day. Molly does not want to go out on our tiny patio; she has demanded a full-on regular walk to the dog park. I am not thrilled. She does not seem to care.

Sunny morning here. Left at 5:50(!) with the parents' dog to a nearby river town that has a small beach, a park with tables and electric BBQs, and a wharf. He enjoyed exploring each. He is not really interested in river water, but if I wade in he follows. The ocean beach is a different story -- he darts in* and snaps at the waves.

    * as much as he can on the leash; my parents did not train him and if let off he runs away and it takes an eternity to retrieve him...
  • Snuggling with one kitty (Sunny) while her sister (Stormy) sleeps nearby on the same bed. 🥰

My friend's dear little dog Nelly has been very badly attacked by a mastiff. She's already lost a leg and has two badly infected bites.

    I don't think she'll pull through 😢🙏

  • That's really shit, Boogie. Prayers for Nelly and her family.
  • How awful, Boogie :(

Oh, so sorry to hear about little Nelly. (What do you think will happen to the mastiff...?)
  • BoogieBoogie Heaven Host
Dear Nelly is holding on and eating a little.

Ted met her in the spring for a romp on Padstow beach. She's a lovely old girl.

The police will call round and warn them to muzzle the mastiff in public and that will be it.

We (our dog forum) have set up a crowd fund for the vets bill (£4000 and rising) as Nelly wasn't insured and her owners live on their old age pensions. Half has been raised already. 🙂

Dear Nelly is still with us after a scare today when she went downhill and was back at the vets. She's home again now.

They don't pray on the forum they send 'lambies'.

    I send prayers and lambies 🙏🙏 🐑🐑

Aroha's name means 'love' in Maori. After watching her chase the elderly cat next door I am wondering If I should change it. It served her right that the neighbour's dog raced to the cat's defence. The dog's barking and the rattle of a bag of treats encouraged her back home.

I don't know what they put in those treats, but they work well in distracting her from things she shouldn't be doing.
