Nominations closed on Thursday morning. You're not allowed to lynch anybody who wasn't nominated before the deadline. Votes for people who weren't nominated are not counted. If you think someone else ought to have been nominated you can try again next week assuming you both survive the night.
    Voting is now closed.

    No Lynching: seven votes.
    Rover (Boogie): two votes.
    Spoiled ballot: one.
    One no show.
I hereby declare that there has been no lynching.

That resolved, night has fallen. Despite any efforts you might make to stay awake the gentle rocking of the boat lulls you all to sleep. Nevertheless you sleep fitfully and have the impression that there are people moving about in the dark.

Those of you with night actions - that is, the detective, the doctor, and the mafia - please take them by sending a private message to me.

You wake up. It would be a beautiful day except that it is raining, a dull steady drizzle. Also, I am sorry to report that Sloth has been foully murdered in the night.
You have until Thursday morning to decide between yourselves who are the most promising suspects, defend yourselves, and nominate deserving and undeserving candidates for lynching.

I should add: Sloth was innocent and had no special role.
  • Miss du Chat opened her eyes and looked beyond the awning to a world of grey wetness. Her fellow survivors hunch and stir where they've carved out their personal areas to sleep. Her eye is caught by the stillness of Mr Sloth ... and she begins to scream
  • Woken by a scream, Jonathon wakes and looks around

    "Whaaaaasssit ?"
  • Miss du Chat uncovers her tear covered face and gestures towards the rigid body of Sloth - "L-look ...!"

At first glance, Sloth looked no different from normal. Asleep, in other words. It was only on closer inspection that his fellow passengers noticed the unnatural stilless and the handle of the butterknife protruding from his ear. Dangling from the handle was a luggage label, and printed on it were the words "CAUGHT YA NAPPIN'. Clearly the murderers were more interested in irony than buttered toast.

Disgusting Dog has lost his usual bounce. He liked Sloth and is confused by his still, cold body. He goes and lies down next to it, whimpering softly.

The Honourable Miss Amy Alton manages to look elegant and refined even while sleeping in her clothes on the deck of a desolate life boat, curled up under an old sail. That is, apart from the bit of drool in the corner of her mouth. When she wakes up, she quickly notices and rectifies the situation. It wouldn't do for the other passengers to notice!

Ah, the daily murder has happened. Miss Alton has read enough detective novels (illicitly, without her mother's permission) to know how this works. We should expect such a thing every day, barring night-time heroics, until the culprits are caught.

Who was it? Sloth? Hmmm. Miss Alton tries to remember much about him. He wasn't particularly talkative. He had mentioned not liking dogs, she recalls, but he couldn't be bothered to stand up and do anything about it. Miss Alton approves of that. Why should people be bothered to do anything that does not directly benefit them?

In hindsight, nothing will be benefiting Sloth again.

Miss Alton's whodunnits have also led her to expect a grizzled and cynical detective to turn up on the scene quite soon. She wonders if he (for it is always a he) was investigating last night? She supposes he won't show his hand too soon, lest he be brutally murdered. Sensible.
  • "Oh dear", Jonathon goes pale
    "that poor fellow"

"I'm not entirely sure what he did to draw attention to himself...."

At least the dog wasn't trying to lick at any more wounds. Or butter, for that matter.
Maybe some people's suspicion of the dog yesterday was misplaced.

Jonathon shudders, looking again at the body.
'at this rate' he mused to himself 'our rations are going to last longer, as I for one certainly don't feel like eating any breakfast'
  • Kookoosint looks at the scene and considers the butter knife. He considers Sloth. Not much to go on. Poor Sloth. Most cruelly Slain. Can someone say a few words?
  • Right, no more messing, I nominate Miss Alton for a lynching. Waaay too much chat outta that one.

Miss Alton tries to decide how to respond to this. She doesn't want to die. But propriety probably dictates she doesn't protest this too much. It dictates most everything else, after all!

"I would have thought," she responds cautiously, "that it's the ones who don't talk much that we should be watching out for!"

Whereupon she settles down to eat Jonathon's breakfast, avoiding any eyes on her.

Miss Alton, I know that being abruptly accused of a heinous act could be a cause of stress, but shouldn't you at least have asked, before tucking into another person's rations?
  • Miss du Chat looked at her virtually untouched rations, turned to the young gentleman and gestured wordlessly towards them. Her mind was turning over the events of the last few days.

"Miss Alton, you said yesterday that we should lynch Rover as that would make us safer. Can you explain that again, please?"
  • Phereniki takes a moment to take it all in and senses her usual serenity waning. “Maybe we should make a list of everything we know so far, although I suspect it will be a short list when what we really need is a shortlist!”

  • "Miss Alton, you said yesterday that we should lynch Rover as that would make us safer. Can you explain that again, please?"

"Yes", said Kookoosint, "explain!". He was also thinking about the obviousness off the new nomination and wondering about the nominator too. And the slightly odd conversation between Lambie and Miss Big Appetite Alton.

I recall mentioning it as her "any lynching is a good lynching" theory when talking to Miss Alton, and nearly following her lead. (no pun intended)
I wonder if she would have been as keen to lynch anyone else, had they been nominated at the time, rather than specifically the dog.
What would she have done if there had been more than one nomination ?
What would the rest of us have done ?
    Why nominate Rover?
I wonder if she's being set up as a scapegoat (oh, another animal!) by someone else.....

Miss Alton (the Honourable Miss Alton!) considers her reply.

"I would have been rather pleased if multiple people had been nominated. Recall that the nomination deadline rather crept up on me."

Miss Alton declines to mention the slight case of seasickness that she had been trying to hide, which was the reason she missed the deadline.

"If more than one person had been nominated, it would have been very interesting to see who each person voted for. In particular, who followed the lead of whom. With two days to go, it would be rather good if we can get a choice of maybe three people this time?

"I'll nominate someone myself, if that's what it takes, after I've spent a bit more time considering the evidence."
  • Miss du Chat had been sitting fussing with her hat and scarves. She looked around the lifeboat at the other characters: "We started with 9 people, a dog and a parrot in the lifeboat, with a corpse." She gulped and quavered on, "We now have 8 people, a dog and a parrot - and two corpses," with a tremulous tearful glance towards Mr Sloth. She paused for thought, then continued, "If two of those characters are responsible for these heinous murders, then our odds are 8:2. If we had lynched an innocent character yesterday our odds would by 7:2, which is worse for the innocent characters."

She looked around the boat to see if anyone was paying attention, "So the Honourable Miss Alton was misleading us, however innocently."

She fluttered her scarves again and said, almost under her breath, "Do we need to think carefully about those who voted to lynch Rover?"
  • "Yes, as I tried to work out yesterday (my head is still hurting) then in lynching an innocent yesterday we would have been 8:2 by nightfall, and then either still 8:2 or 7:2 today, depending on whether anyone was alert enough to stop anything last night

however, if we had lynched a guilty party, we would have been 9:1 by nightfall, and either still 9:1 or 8:1 today which are better odds. As I mentioned, lynching is the only way to improve our odds, it just depends on whether the probability of getting it right is high enough to outweigh the risk of getting it wrong, and I was scared of getting it wrong yesterday....

At the moment there are two nominations: No Lynching, and The Honourable Miss Alton (Amy). If you wish to nominate anybody else you have just over thirty six hours until 8am Thursday morning (GMT). Nominations after that time will be accepted if they come in before I officially close nominations, which may happen at any time after 8am without further warning on the round tuit principle.
  • She looked around the boat to see if anyone was paying attention, "So the Honourable Miss Alton was misleading us, however innocently."

She fluttered her scarves again and said, almost under her breath, "Do we need to think carefully about those who voted to lynch Rover?"

There were only 2 votes to lynch Rover. Lambie - who made the accusation, and Honourable Miss Alton. Miss Alton has already come under some scrutiny, do we need to discuss Lambie and why she chose Rover in the first place?
  • [huffs] Rover peed on my manuscript, you may remember! A dog that would do such a thing would do ANYTHING!
  • “Hmm...unless he was peeing on the manuscript to protect Lambie from giving herself away as his co-mafia. Even murderers have loyalties and friends. Afterall, there is some kernel of kindness in everyone.”

Phereniki looked at each inhabitant inquisitively wondering where loyalties might lie since this is not the work of one individual.
  • DafydDafyd Hell Host
A reminder: you have just over twelve hours to nominate somebody other the Honourable Miss Alton. If you want somebody lynched who isn't her, now is the time to nominate them.
  • Ha. To put a stop to such deplorable logic, I'm re-nominating the dreadful Doggie.
  • BoogieBoogie Heaven Host
Miss Alton - guilty, guilty, guilty!

She’s too good to be true, smarmy and slimy.

    I nominate Miss Alton
  • Kookoosint looks up from his map making. He flourishes his pencil and grunts. "Hmmm. Is Miss Alton merely hungry, excessively cheerful and perky or is she a murderer?", he says to no one in particular. Then he turns to Wet Kipper and asks for reasoning. He further turns to Lambie and asks what's the deal with hating dogs? Being a very sinful sort, Kookoosint keeps a-turning, hoping to put the devil who did this horrid deed in his sights. Navigationally speaking of course.

Miss Alton looks up from her notebook, wherein she has been writing character profiles of the other shipmates. Here's what is written within:

Phereniki, you think we should list everything we know? Perhaps we should start with you. You've been rather indecisive, not wanting to rush into anything. You hypothesised that Lambie and Rover might be in it together… but is that really likely when Lambie has voted for Rover on two days running?

Lambie, I suppose it might be an excellent double bluff to double down on a fellow murderer, and if Rover turned out to be guilty we'd certainly be thinking of you as innocent. But it's quite a gamble. Are you good at cards?

Rover. You became suspicious of me. That's fair I suppose, this was after I voted for you. (You're wrong of course, for the record.) Were you unfairly maligned on day 1, or was it someone's lucky guess? Time will tell.

Fletcher. You also seem to have it in for me. You attempted to vote for me on day 1, even when it was against the rules! I wonder what made you do that. If you were an evil murderer and Rover were not, it might have been in your better interest to join the (ahem) dog pile. Unless you are both mafia…

The parrot has been rather quiet. A bit of defending Rover on day one, but silence since then. Do animals stick together? Is the silence suspicious? We don't yet know.

Kookoosint. Another one who thinks I'm suspicious? He did not like me voting for Rover on day one, then on day two backed up Miss du Chat in calling for me to explain my logic. I haven't heard what he thinks is suspicious.

Miss du Chat: a bit of mild suspicion of Rover but then turned it around to defend him before the vote. She does not trust my mathematical abilities, and is suspicious of all who voted for Rover.

Jonathon: a most prolific debater. He has gone back and forth on whether it is better to lynch early or not. I'm pleased he defended me from the pile-on on day two, although I get the sense he has not reached any definite conclusions yet. (Nor have we all…)

Gwai has been completely silent. This is most disturbing.

Miss Alton considers who she should vote for. She only voted for Rover yesterday due to some vote being better than no vote. It seems a bit off to vote for him two days in a row if no new information has come to light. So, who?

Gwai is suspicious for silence. She did not even cast a vote on the first day. Can such apathy be tolerated? But then, there are a number of people and animals who haven't voiced many suspicions themselves: the parrot, Phereniki… And of course we have the people such as Kookoosint and Fletcher who think Miss Alton is suspicious for wanting to get started on the lynching. Are they aware what we're up against? It's kill or be killed out here!

Miss Alton cannot blame people for suspecting her. It's only prudent to have constant vigilance, after all. The more worrying thing is the rationale for the suspicion. We really do have to lynch people here!

Although Miss Alton is harbouring a number of suspicions by now, she thinks the quiet ones are too big a risk. It would be all too easy for a murderer to hide, silently, not drawing attention to themselves.

    Nominate Gwai.
  • Miss du Chat looked up from where she had been twisting the tails of her shawl.

"If we need to worry about the quiet ones, Lambie worries me with her murderous impulses - when that is all she says. I nominate Lambie."
  • DafydDafyd Hell Host
    Nominations are closed.
    We have five nominations.
    The Honourable Miss Alton (Amy)
    Rover (Boogie)
    Gwai (Gwai)
    Lambie (Lamb Chopped)
    and No Lynching.
If no candidate receives a majority of the votes, No Lynching will win by default.

Voting will close at 11pm GMT Friday on the usual principles.
You may wish to let those nominated put up a defence before you vote for them, or to discuss voting tactics among yourselves. Or you may not.
Actual votes in a line by themselves at the end of the post preferably in bold please.
  • Of all four candidates only two have attracted my attention. A dog that laps blood is disgusting, but it is a dog after all and that is what they do. Can we really blame it for following its instincts? The Dishonourable Miss Alton on the other hand seems intent on obfuscation and misdirection.....and she talks a lot. So, probably rather predictably, I shall cast my vote in favour of lynching Miss Alton.

    Lynching Vote: Miss Alton.

It is, of course, only by talking a lot that we can get anywhere in a situation like this.
  • Miss du Chat rather agreed with the Honourable Miss Alton, at least there is something to consider when the other people talk, sitting in silence, with only the occasional mutter is most disconcerting. Particularly when any comments are murderous.

So Rover has been nominated by Lambie, twice in as many days, and yet today Rover chose not to counter-nominate Lambie (miss Du Chat did that instead, later) but instead asked to nominate Miss Alton, who had already been nominated.

Does Rover know something about Lambie that should stop us lynching her ?
Does Rover know something about Miss Alton that should have us paying her more attention ?
( hooray for a bigger edit window)
having thought about this, does Lambie know something about Rover that should cause such persistance in nominations ?

Gwai wakes up in a ship's cabin. "Wha what? Where am I? That must have been quite the night last night? What's going on and where is the head?"

"Me kill someone? No man, I've been uh passed out. I didn't even realize I was on a boat. I definitely didn't kill anyone.

OOC: Sorry everyone. Work got crazy and I completely forgot!
  • "Ah, so you are awake during the day after all.
You'd been so quiet, and sleeping so much (we could tell you weren't dead) that we were wondering if you were nocturnal"

"Facilities are over that way" points Jonathon

"have you managed to hear all our conversations, while you were sleeping, or do we need to repeat everything again?"
  • Lambie, are you a wicked murdering Lambie?

Miss Alton: are you still hungry?

    Rover: do you eat kippers?

Gwai: what was it you last remembered before passing out?

Kookoosint is asking as he pours Jonathon a pint of grog and sits back to listen.

Yes please - I’d love some kipppppers!

  • “I’m starting to feel the need for a pint of grog myself if it’s still going!”

Has Gwai been investigating on the side?
  • "Of course I'm not wicked!" Lambie says indignantly. "At least, only in my books, which is why they sell so well. Three copies last year!"

    Lambie or Miss Alton.
    Or Rover or Gwai.

Navigationally speaking, there are two classes of choice as listed above. Of the two of Lambie and Hon Miss Alton, Lambie is behaving the most peculiarly notwithstanding this is dead reckoning (pun intended) with limited data.

Gwai and Rover. Do we take Gwai at her word about sleepers. Or duo we consider that her name almost rhymes with Hawaii where Captain Cook was murdered? Nope that's not enough to go on. Rover has been acting doggie like, which tips things neither fore nor aft, so to speak. Thus ruling out and protracting the map back to the Lamster and the Altonator.

Thus, one of these two is going overboard to sleep with the fishes, unless some better stars are guiding better navigation. Shall drink more grog, alot more actually, sing a while and see if dreams come to guide me brains. And see if some others have come to good reasoning to heel the boat toward the dexter or the sinister. Or some other direction neither compass nor shipboard. Three sheets to the wind and sailing to oblivion. Whose into a whopping whoop-up. Jonathon! the bottle she doth stand by you!

Jonathon picks up the bottle and takes a swift, but small swig.
"you sir, are a gent, however forgive if I only partake slightly.
I know that being verr, verr, druuhnk probably saved my life in term of the ship, however survival is becoming an even more perilous situation, and I don't want to muddle my senses too much.
I like the course of your thinking, I just need to sail through my I own choppy waters of reasoning a bit more first

"I think I heard things in my sleep about this boat having some bad people and us needing to figure out who did it but it'll take me some time to process.
Last thing I remember besides what I heard in my sleep? There was this really cute sailor and he said that the bars by the docks were far and way the best. Well, what kind of guy would I be to say no to that!"

It is all a bit suspicious and I'm pretty sure I'm too hungover to know what I think, but I'm suspicious of the Rover vs. Lambie thing going on. It could be a made-up fight between conspirators but it has a real potential to get one of them thrown off, so it's is questionably done if so. Which would imply they are not both conspirators. And what is going on with Ms. Alton who is or is not honorable but is rather bloodthirsty. I'm not so sure about that either. I hate to speak against anyone when I'm quite sure I don't know. But one can't just sit around and let decent people get murdered. Besides if I don't vote someone might notice how hungover I am, and I'm not that sort. And maybe Rover and Lambie are conspirators. After all, Rover didn't nominate Lambie back, so he wasn't intending to have both of them in danger.

"Rover, do you have anything to say for yourself? How do you feel about Lambie? Do you think we should we be voting for her?"
  • edited March 2018
After sobering up and splashing some seawater around, Kookoosint has navigated over to an upright position. He heard Gwai's commentary, and considers his own. There ain't too much to go on. But go on we must.

Lambie, of the group, you look the most suspicious to me. I agree with the possible conspiracy theories, yes, they are possible. But we got to make a move to save us innocent people! I think we should throw Lambie overboard.

Boogie votes for Miss Alton again.. She doesn’t ring true in anything she says. She’s too nice, too pleasant, too cloyingly agreeable.
  • Not much in favour of lynching Phereniki is hesitant to vote and yet something must be done to try and halt these atrocities.

    Vote: Lambie
