Hmm--although I'm pretty sure I've posted at least a couple times earlier this year, from the reaction my post elsewhere on this board I guess either I haven't, or it wasn't memorable enough for anyone to notice, so... Hi! I'm still here. The husband got a new job at a medical school/research facility in Manhattan, so no more dealing with the mess that is Florida. We've moved to Connecticut (still stumbling on the spelling!) as of May, and are greatly enjoying the climate--both in terms of weather AND political/social!
I've also begun my retirement countdown--1 year, 11 months to go!

That all sounds so good @Siegfried. I hadn't realised until recently how different the political climate could be in different parts of America. I'm still very annoyed we have the MP we have, but there isn't that big a difference politically between different bits of England.
  • Just joined earlier. Figured I would give it a few days to see if this is for me. I’m a Christian but the terms that I use following that is Omnism and naturalism. If there is spectrum of Christianity to atheist I’m far more along the atheist side. So I don’t believe in, or rather I’m highly skeptical of supernaturals claims. I don’t believe in biblical inerrancy, I think much of the Bible, including the gospels, are filled with myths and reject all forms of intelligent design including the belief god guided evolution. When it comes to biology and cosmology, 100% naturalist. I view Christianity as the mythology I most closely relate to concerning the cosmic being called god by different religions regardless if it’s Yahweh to ancient Jews, El to other ancient Jews, Vishnu to ancient Indians and so on. I think the vedas, the Book of Mormon, the Bible and Lord of the Rings are all equally god breathed. Though my favorite way to feel connected to god is vegan cooking, horror films and hiking.

Welcome! I like some horror films though I tend to prefer the campy ones, monster movies, and/or old (1930s-1980s) classic ones. (It’s weird to think of the 1980s as classic or old but that was 40+ years ago now…)

    Welcome, @Skovand!
  • Nice to meet you! You'll find a mix of everything here. My son would be interested in how you connect horror films to feeling connected to God--in fact, if you wanted to start a thread, it would make a lovely topic. Probably for Heaven...
  • I enjoy a wide range of horror films. I like the B horrors of the 50s. Especially the sci-fi horror films. Tom Weaver a film historian has done some really good writing on them. Next book I want to get is one of the film books on “The Creature from the Black Lagoon.”

I also enjoy the gory slashers full of practical effects with minimal CGI of the 80s. Always looking forward to Tom Savini. A friend of mine, Joe, does a decent amount of SFX work.

I enjoy the modern elevated scene as well. Horror as a social commentary is pretty cool. The amount of symbolism in films like “Nope” and the way it incorporated “lost episode style creepypasta” made it one of my favorite films.

I also am a big fan of found footage horror. Tubi has quite a bit. I have Shudder which has some. Obviously none has as much FFH as POVhorror. Creep, Hell House and Tahoe Joe are some of my favorite series. I am looking forward to “We Put the World to Sleep” by Adrian Tofei. He’s another acquaintance and did “Be my Cat”.

As for recent horror “I Saw the Tv Glow”, “Oddity”, “In A Violent Nature” was all good. I’m a sucker for the alien franchise. Really enjoyed Romulus. Looking forward to Earth as well.

    Welcome aboard.

Interesting piece in The Guardian on upcoming horror films and the wider influence of the genre.

Not my preferred reading/viewing - that would be period detective fiction.

A former Shipmate has written extensively about folk horror, his book was a finalist in the 2018 Bram Stoker Awards. We Don't Go Back, he's also written quite extensively in his blog about other movies (including everything about Planet of the Apes). I don't think he ever indulged his passion for movies here on the Ship, though it's quite possible he did.

A warm welcome from me @skovand. If you haven't done so already it would be worth having a look at our version of The Ten Commandments.

That’s really cool. I enjoy folk horror as well. Shudder last year did a nice in-depth documentary on folk horror. I tend to lean more towards the very fairy side of folk horror but watched Witch Finder General and thought it was shot really cool. I’m also a fan of mushroom foraging and so had extra points in it for me lol.
  • Well, hey, everyone! I am once again making a comeback to this wonderful forum which I've sadly neglected. Not sure of the thought process that made me wind up retrieving my lost password yet again, but glad it happened!

    Hello and welcome back!

    Thanks!!
Updates: since my last visit in 2022, when I had just made the jump from Byzantine Catholic to Episcopalian, I've been put on the Vestry, into the choir, into helping with Sunday School, taking communion to a seniors home, and took over for the office manager, where I produce the bulletins, newsletter, prayer lists, etc. Whew!

I've cut back on a few of these (no longer in choir due to vocal issues), but feels like I've been offered wayyy more chances to serve here, just in the last couple of years, than in all my decades as a Catholic. Not sure why that is, but having been more or less forcibly retired a few years ago, and feeling old age hitting faster than I'd like (67!), it's quite a nice feeling to be needed!

Hi Folks, thought I'd finally get round to posting on here!

I'm from NE England, would describe myself as a weak atheist/agnostic, never had any kind of faith, but I'm what you'd call a non-resistant nonbeliever - it would be great if, when I died, I found out that there was an all-loving deity out there.

I have incurable neuroendocrine cancer, but its not terminal, so I have a good few years left. In a couple of weeks time I'll be a father. I'm a bit mentally interesting (thanks, depression and post-acute antidepressant withdrawal syndrome).

I am a keen photographer and like to visit a lot of historic churches and cathedrals - last summer I managed to see Salisbury, Chichester and Winchester, hope I can visit a few more this year. I occasionally make it to Quaker meetings.

Looking forward to posting on here and meeting everyone.

It looks like you've been having a snout round the boards already, but should you have any questions, the Ten Commandments and FAQ pages (link on the home page) should answer them.

    Happy sailing with us!

  • Hi @TheDispossessed, also from the North East (Far North East Queensland, that is, but we get Vera on repeat 😊). Enjoy the voyage!
