  • Ryan O'Neal

I've seen Love Story and a few of his minor roles. But I will always most closely associate him with Barry Lyndon, where he really just blended right in as another object in the splendid scenery.

I loved “Barry Lyndon” (and I can’t hear the Sarabande from the Handel Keyboard Suite in d minor without thinking of that movie), and I also loved him in “Paper Moon.” But I mainly think of Ryan O’Neal as Howard Bannister in “What’s Up Doc,” opposite Barbra Streisand and Madelyn Kahn.

That’s three movies I need to go looking for.

  • I recall him in Peyton Place…

  • Andre Braugher, a wonderful actor, seen in Homicide, Life on the Streets, and other series. Also in Shakespeare. Only 61.
  • Choral music composer, educator and advocate of communal singing Alice Parker died the day before Christmas. She was 98.

I'm sure many of you remember Comet. (I miss her here on the Ship.)
She posted on the Book of Face that her mother passed on Christmas Eve while listening to A Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols.

I think I'd like to do that when it's my time.

    ((( @comet )))
  • I remember @comet and her posts fondly. May her mother RIPARIG
  • Hugs and prayers for Comet.
  • I don't think anyone's yet mentioned the delightfully avuncular Henry Sandon, long-term presenter of The Antiques Roadshow:

  • I was at primary school with a granddaughter of his, so met him a few times, and he also came and talked to us at least once.
  • Tommy Smothers, of the Smothers Brothers, has died at 86.

So sorry to hear about Comet's mum. I too miss Comet here.
  • You can add the Knotweed and I to the list who miss Comet. We had the joy of being in the same chatroom as her in one of Ye Time of Plague Zooms.

May her mum rest in peace and rise in glory.

Sorry to hear about Comet's mum, and I'm adding my name to those that miss Comet. I think I just missed her on that Plague Zoom.
  • I miss ya, too, Comet. Sorry about your loss.

    I miss comet too.
  • And me.
  • I, too, miss Comet, and am sorry to read of the loss of her mother.

I barely recall anything about The Full Monty, though I associate it with the mainstreaming of erotic entertainment that got underway in the mid-90s, with Calendar Girls being a later entry into that particular canon.

I did appreciate his turn as the repentant legal-shark in Michael Clayton, though his monologue about having a moral epiphany in a brothel was a little over the top. The scenes of him wandering around Manhattan in a prophetic stupor were well executed.

Just watched a few scenes from Michael Clayton. Wilkinson

Iconic anti-apartheid photographer Peter Magubane has died at the age of 92. (link to Washington Post hopefully accessible to most Shippies; there is also a tribute in the New York Times.)

If you are wondering why the name sounds familiar, this makes an interesting - if depressing - read.

Eh? I saw The Full Monty way back then and the last thing I would have described it as would be 'erotic'!

    Ditto “Calendar Girls.”

  • Sorry if that was confusing; I didn't mean the movies themselves were erotic. I meant that the plot-lines present burlesque dancing and soft-core modeling as acceptable activities for the characters to engage in. As opposed to previous screen treatments, where those vocations are often portrayed as exploitative, or at least having problematic consequences for the people involved.

Glynis Johns has died aged 100. My dad always fancied her and wanted to call me Glynis. I liked her acting, but think I've had a lucky escape name wise.

Glynis is a nice name, I think - though there were two Glynises in my class and one was horrible.
  • A sad loss to his family, as well as to the Labour party:

I did not know until yesterday that the woman who played the mother in Mary Poppins was also the singer for whom Send In The Clowns was written.

The Sound Of Music doesn't appear on Ms. Johns' filmography on wiki. I assume you're thinking of Mary Poppins?

I don't think @MaryLouise was suggesting that. She was just giving another example (in addition to @Sarasa 's) of a child avoiding a problematic name arising from a parent's fandom.
