    Well spotted!

    Why, thank you, kind sir!
  • HedgehogHedgehog Shipmate
This one from our beloved Wales Online is more of a game because it is a "premium" article that I can only read if I pay. As a result, I have no easy way of figuring out exactly what it is the headline is trying to tell me! Join in the game! What are they saying?

Prison worker assaulted woman before his brother collapsed his trial with vile texts

It seemed to be going fairly clearly until we got to the brother. Who seems to have collapsed...or not. And he was trying out vile texts? That doesn't sound quite right. And for that matter, when we say "his trial", to whom are we referring? The prison worker or the brother?
  • We are relieved to read in the Glasgow Herald today: Woman charged in connection with dissident republican bomb.
I had not heard of such an ordnance as a dissident bomb. Could this be one of the new generation of smart weapons?
  • And a republican one at that, don't you just know?
  • "Nation.Cymru": "NASA chief meets Welsh academic behind Mars rover instrument".

Better than behind the bike shed, I suppose.
  • HedgehogHedgehog Shipmate
Getting behind the instrument was easy. Getting to Mars for the meeting was the pain.
  • SipechSipech Shipmate
Is a rover that intended for Mars still a Mars rover if it's only stayed on Earth, or does it have to have been to Mars for it to be called a Mars rover?
  • "Wales Online" (ever reliable!): "Man seriously injured as police cordon off area outside hotel and restaurant". So what happened? Did he get bound up in the "Do Not Cross" tape?
  • Wesley JWesley J Circus Host
    ... and tripped and fell?
  • Quite possibly.
  • TheOrganistTheOrganist Shipmate
Many, many years ago I remember a headline in (I think) The Sun which read Priest who wed nun appeals to Vatican. I think the only answer to that would be "I'm pretty sure he doesn't".

... and another from the ever-giving local press, in this case the local rag where we used to live, the Chichester Observer - Stop treading water on sewage reform. I think the only response is 😱🤮
  • Not weird but poor grammar from the BBC: "My entire family went on a boat trip that they never returned from". Why not "... from which they never returned"?

(It's a sad story of a tourist boat disaster 60 years ago).

I suppose there's a given maximum length for headlines, as there often is for articles?
  • Not, I'd have thought, in this case - it's not a print version.

BBC 'Police hunt darts match attacker in lobster suit'

Can't help feeling they'd be better off in uniform.

Wouldn't players be bound to attack a darts match, as in 'begin with a task'? Which makes the police lobster suit even wilder.

'Can't even start a game these days, and the coppers march in, dressed as lobsters...!'

They must have come from a crustation, not a police station.
  • That is a thoroughly homophonic remark. [Groans].

... and highly enjoyed by many.

    (Well found, BT!)
  • An announcement for an upcoming TV special:

Social Media Dangerous to Kids at 10:00pm

Shouldn't they be in bed by then with their phones off?
  • "Nation Cymru": Man sentenced after dog found tied to tree with disease.

So which had the disease - the tree or the dog? Yes, the dog - which isn't what the grammar implies.
  • Maybe 'disease' is a new type of tether?

But what on earth was wrong with writing "diseased dog"?

You are right, especially as the press normally seems to grade diseases, dogs and trees in that order of interest.

What happens at exactly 10 pm to make social media suddenly change from being safe to dangerous?
