They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning
We will remember them.
June 6th was the day my Dad died in 2017. I can't visit his grave today so after work I will go over to Clifton Hampden and pay my respects at the grave of Major John Howard of Pegasus Bridge fame.
Dad was 13 come D-Day, he saw the bombers heading out. He would understand.
I've been reading some fiction set just before WWII and the thought of a boy watching the bombers head out grounds it in reality and brought tears to my eyes.
The Allies expected the soldiers who landed in the first couple of waves to suffer very heavy casualties. Thankfully it proved to be not the case apart from on Omaha beach. The majority of these soldiers were young and inexperienced. The reasons for this were two fold.
1. Because they they hadn't experienced action before, they would be less afraid as they didn't know what it would really be like
2. The Allies didn't want to lose experienced soldiers who would be needed in the main campaign.
It does sound rather callous but it could be argued that it worked.
It's my annual week of feeling sorry for the Cheery husband. Daughter's birthday yesterday, very low key and spent together, with everyone's individual favourite take=out for dinner.
Today is my birthday, thus the feeling sorry for husband, 2 birthdays in 2 days. Daughter was 3 weeks early, so not poor planning on our part! Have had a lovely time opening cards from the post and scoring 2 lovely new books. Kids and I will have lunch together. At first I thought we might go out, but now I think we might just get some fancy sandwiches and sit in the garden. Daughter had a lovely pear and apple cake yesterday, so hopefully some leftovers of that to be shared today.

I was born the day after my Mum's birthday because she refused to go into hospital on her birthday. I was induced because Mum had difficulties with my older brother's birth.
A happy birthday to our very own @Bishops Finger ! Wishing you a happy day which will hopefully include BEER and maybe PIE. I'll raise a toast with my coffee cup shortly and a glass of red this evening.

I'm sure he would understand your choice.
