  • This is Hell in all of its forms. Like pornography, repetitive shootings pretty much seem to get boring after a while. Apparently the tally of people shot dead is up by 11 more in New Orleans, Louisiana, with perhaps some others going to die or going to survive.

Some context on the Naval Air Station Pensacola shooting:
NBC/MSNBC is now reporting that the shooter at Naval Air Station (NAS) Pensacola is a Saudi national. Which will, of course, turn a tragedy into an absolute shitshow.

Mr. Silverman goes on at length to explain why a Saudi national (if that indeed turns out to be the case) was likely assigned to the Pensacola Naval Air Station and firearms regulations for base personnel. Click through if you want the (speculative but informed) details.
  • Firearms are not authorized on Naval Air Station-Pensacola, or any other base, with a couple of exceptions. Military Police, Shore Patrol, and DOD and Service Police are armed as part of their duty assignments. All other Service issued arms are secured in an arms room/armory and can only be checked out for a legitimate training reason and under the supervision of an Armory Officer/Armorer.

Have the US military not heard of the 2nd Amendment?

  • amen. I'm finding it irritating but predictable that the Pensacola Naval Base shooting gets all the media coverage when there are so many others, more than weekly. We are getting it on our domestic news services here. I know, I know, Terrorism, Saudi Arabia. It still shits me.

Me too. I'm also utterly dismayed by encountering (in the source accompanying the report of the 5-year-old's death) a concept new to me: a "family shootout." WTF!!?? Is this now a thing??!! In this my own, my native land??!!
  • Ohher--

If this was one person doing the shooting, I think it's been a thing for a very long time. Someone, for whatever reasons, decides to kill relatives. Then they kill themselves; or they're killed by cops; or they wind up in prison.

I think most of the situations I've heard of, over the years, have been marital and/or custody disputes; or someone was finally pushed over the edge, maybe due to job loss, and all their frustration and anger exploded all over people around them; or someone who was abused, and either wanted revenge or simply for the abuse to stop.

Sometimes, when a parent kills their kids and then themself, they see it as saving their kids from a horrible world. Sometimes, though, the parent survives, or runs out of time and is discovered, or loses their nerve.

It's not always with a gun. Knife, car, etc. Lizzie Borden is famous for killing her parents with an axe. What's often forgotten is she was acquitted. I read an article, some years back, possibly in Wikipedia, that there were several other people who had motive.

Anyway, long version of saying it's not a new thing. FWIW.
  • I don't know the percentages, but I reckon family violence would be right up there in Australia as a cause of gun violence. I think, without checking, that the only mass shootings here since 1996 have been domestic violence.
  • OhherOhher Shipmate
Oh, of course; the people we're closest to are also the people we're apparently most apt to maim and kill. It's not that; it's the phrase itself: "family shootout," right up there with "family tree," "family guy," and "family values." So lighthearted, so dismissive. So normalizing.
  • A few years ago there was a "family killing" not far from where I live in which one family of four methodically entered four houses and killed seven members of another family, the Rhodens, plus one more.

I've been waiting for Dateline to do a story about it but missed the fact that the Oxygen station had covered it. Missed because they titled it The Piketon Family Murders Piketon being the name of the town, not the family. Isn't it awful that we have to establish standards for this sort of reporting lest it become confusing?

With all those good guys with guns, it should be the safest place in the USA.
  • There's a major shooting incident going on in New Jersey, in Jersey City. One police officer dead, three people wounded, ongoing for several hours.
  • RuthRuth Admin Emeritus
6 dead now - a police officer, the 2 suspects, 3 members of the public. The suspects carried long guns into a kosher market and opened fire, though police are saying they think the store was chosen at random. There was a big shoot-out, and the whole thing went on for over two hours. There is a yeshiva with young kids next door and a Catholic elementary school across the street. These and other schools in the area were on lockdown for hours.

Now they're saying it appears the kosher market was targeted. The shooters first killed the cop, then drove over a mile to the market and shot people inside. But they're point out they're not using the word "anti-Semitic," which ... really? I suppose it's possible the shooters had a beef with the market owner, but my money is on anti-Semitism as the motive.

I don't know about them. But a lot of US people get stressed, depressed, and/or angry during the winter holidays. Generally due to a social atmosphere where you're supposed to be HAPPY and NESTLED WITH YOUR FAMIL (with whom you EAT LARGE AMOUNTS OF FESTIVE FOOD), get and give WONDERFUL PRESENTS, and have A MATE OR A DATE! Lots of people are missing some or all of those, and don't see/have a way to get them. Plus alcohol. Add guns or other weapons to that mix...pointed at self or others...

    :( (:votive:)

Thought I'd take a look around hell maybe write my initials somewhere. Seriously though, as a 'murican I got to tell you it truly sucks being this 'exceptional'. Why can't we just be normal, maybe aspire to be a good citizen in the world.

But the guns are the worst (not counting Trump). Not sure if everyone appreciates the degree to which those who are strongly pro gun rights here think the second amendment is all about being prepared to over throw a corrupt government when the time comes. What a crazy, crazy idea: that an election decided by bullets should be seen as more valid/important than the one which counts everybody's vote equally. We are so fucked. Of course the gun nutters are firmly behind Trump.

Not to my liking at least and I have no empathy for whatever it may be that others could like about it.
  • It was shrewd of the Republican Party that before they careened down their current path of truly vile corruption, they secured the loyalty of the gun nuts.
