April 10th in 1968 was the date of the worst maritime disaster in NZ history when the interisland ferry, the Wahine hit Barrett's reef at the entrance to Wellington Harbour and 51 people drowned, including one of my mother's great uncles. I remember it every time I catch the ferry.

The last survivor ( a 6 year old boy who was pulled out of the water) survived in a vegetative state for many years after and finally died in 1990. His mother lost a daughter as well.
Many (but not all) Buddhist will be celebrating Vesakh on May 6. (Other Buddhists choose to celebrate Vesakh on other days during the year, but apparently the Vatican decided to settle on this one.) Vesakh commemorates the birth, enlightenment, and death of Gautama Buddha.
